ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Group have extended a production deal with “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, whose first project under the new multiyear pact will be a prequel to the top-rated cable series.
“Taylor Sheridan is a visionary creative whose work has reinvented genres and amassed fan bases around the globe; we are thrilled he calls ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment his home,” Chris McCarthy, President of MTV Entertainment, said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to build upon our partnership with him, expand the ‘Yellowstone’ universe and showcase Taylor’s boundless talent across all of our brands and platforms.”
The new series, produced by 101 Studios for the upcoming Paramount+ streaming service, will be called “Y: 1883,” and follows the Dutton family in the 19th century as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. A preview of the series aired during the Super Bowl Feb. 7.
The series follows a Paramount+ strategy directive to expand franchise opportunities for marquee properties. “Y: 1883” will be executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Hutkin, Bob Yari and 101 Studios CEO David Glasser.
“I am excited to continue the story of ‘Yellowstone,’” Sheridan said in a statement. “And thank you to Chris, Keith and David for allowing me to keep on expanding the family for the fans.”
The third season of “Yellowstone” had the most-watched season premiere on cable in two years, drawing 6.5 million total viewers in live +3 tracking.
As part of his new ViacomCBS deal, Sheridan will create multiplatform content with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios that will be exclusive to ViacomCBS, including but not limited to Paramount Network, Paramount+, CBS and other VCBS brands and platforms. The deal calls for five cycles per year of scripted and procedural series.

This deal is an extension of our longstanding relationship with both ViacomCBS, MTV Entertainment Group and Taylor and we are very much looking forward to our future projects.”
Paramount+, a re-branding and expansion of the current CBS All Access Platform, launches March 4.
