Warner’s ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Expected to Top ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ at Easter Box Office

Despite middling reviews (58% Rotten Tomatoes score), Warner Bros. Pictures’ third installment in the “Fantastic Beasts” movie franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, is projected to top the North American box office with more than $44 million in revenue across more than 4,000 screens through Easter (April 17).

That should be enough to top last weekend’s box office champ, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is expected to generate $36 million in ticket sales across more than 4,200 screens in its second weekend of release. The sequel should top $129 million in revenue through the holiday weekend.

A24’s domestic drama Everything Everywhere All at Once is projected to hold off Sony Pictures’ new-release comedy Father Stu, starring Mark Wahlberg, with $6.4 million and $6.2 million in ticket sales, respectively.

Regardless, the weekend is expected to tick upwards (6%) from last weekend at around $117 million in cumulative box office revenue when factoring in theatrical holdovers The Lost City (Paramount) with $5.8 million, Sony’s Morbius ($5 million), Universal Pictures’ Ambulance ($4.5 million), Warner’s The Batman ($4.1 million) and Sony’s Uncharted ($1.4 million).
