Fandango’s Vudu streaming service has created a list of the best New York City movies ever made, ranked on Rotten Tomatoes.
The list celebrates movies in which the five boroughs play a role, in honor of this week’s theatrical release of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, which offers a tour of Manhattan’s Washington Heights community and ranks as Fandango’s top ticket-seller for the weekend.
The Vudu collection of top NYC Movies includes comedies, dramas, horror flicks, monster movies and musicals.
“There’s something about New York City that’s incredibly cinematic, and it’s not a coincidence that many of the most popular movies of all time, from The Godfather to Goodfellas to Do the Right Thing to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, are set in the five boroughs,” Fandango managing editor Erik Davis said in a statement. “With this week’s release of In the Heights, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the best of the Big Apple on the big screen.”
To compile the films in the editorial guide, Rotten Tomatoes gathered an extensive list of movies set in and about New York, and then ranked them by their adjusted Tomatometer, a formula that takes into account their Tomatometer scores but also number of reviews, year of release, and more, to make comparing movies from different eras fairer. The top 212 selections made the cut, with the “212” number chosen because it was the first area code assigned to New York City in 1947.
