‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Pushes 4K Disc to Record Market Share Numbers

Blu-ray and DVD sales data for the week ended Nov. 12 saw physical-media enthusiasts perk up about 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray accounting for nearly one quarter of sales for the top 50 titles, an all-time high for the format.

According to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc accounted for 24.4% of unit sales for the week’s top 50 titles sold on physical media, a new high for the format. That eclipsed the previous mark of 23.9% set a week earlier. The record prior to that was 21.3% during the sales week ended July 16 of this year.

The market share spike was due almost entirely to the popularity of Top Gun: Maverick in an otherwise weak sales environment for DVD and Blu-ray Disc. In its first week, sales the action sequel from Paramount Home Entertainment accounted for 58% of the top 50 total, with 25% of its tally coming from the 4K edition. That number is especially impressive given that, aside from a Steelbook 4K/Blu-ray combo pack that sold out quickly, most of the 4K sales were of a configuration that would have included just the 4K disc with a code for the digital copy of the movie.

The second week of Maverick’s sales, which coincided with the new 4K market share figure, saw the title account for 32% of all top 50 sales. The 4K share for Maverick dropped to 17% in its second week. The remainder of the 4K market share peak was pushed by high 4K numbers for a number of older titles, since there were few notable new releases to compete with Maverick during the week. A number of titles were just re-released on 4K disc, making that version the most readily available on shelves, such as for Warner’s Casablanca and Edge of Tomorrow, further contributing to increasing the 4K market share number. Stores also began rolling out promotional deals for catalog titles in the lead-up to Black Friday and the holiday shopping season.
