‘Top Gun: Maverick’ on Box Office Cruise Control Entering Second Theatrical Weekend
June 3, 2022
Following a record-setting Memorial Day theatrical debut, Paramount Pictures’ critically acclaimed sequel Top Gun: Maverick is poised to dominate its sophomore box office weekend with a projected $57 million in ticket sales over the three-day weekend through June 5. If those projections hold true, the North American box office take for the Tom Cruise actioner would soar above $242 million.
Additionally, the movie has a chance of becoming the highest-grossing theatrical release following the Memorial Day weekend — a distinction currently held by Paramount’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with $44.7 million in revenue in 2008.
Other enduring theatrical releases include Disney/Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with $9.7 million in projected ticket sales; The Bob’s Burgers Movie (20th Century Studios) at $5 million; Universal Pictures/Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: A New Era with $3.5 million, and Universal Pictures/DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys with $3.2 million.
