‘Top Gun: Maverick’ No. 1 on Disc Sales Charts for Sixth Week; ‘Clerks III’ Debuts at No. 2

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Top Gun: Maverick remained No. 1 for the sixth consecutive week on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended Dec. 10.

That marks the longest continuous run atop the disc sales charts since the original Sonic the Hedgehog had a six-week reign in May and June of 2020, during the early stages of the pandemic.

The week’s No. 2 seller on both charts was the newly released Clerks III, from Lionsgate. The latest film from director Kevin Smith finds the guys at the Quick Stop convenience store making a movie about their lives. Clerks III sold about 36% as many copies in its first week as Maverick in its sixth — which actually represents the best performance by a new title against the “Top Gun” sequel during its run atop the charts. Blu-ray Disc formats accounted for 79% of total Clerks III unit sales, with 58% from regular Blu-ray and 21% from a Best Buy-exclusive 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition.

The No. 3 overall disc seller, down a spot from the previous week, was Universal pictures’ 2018 animated The Grinch, which was No. 9 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. Universal’s 2000 live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas remained No. 4 overall and was No. 11 on the Blu-ray chart.

The No. 5 overall disc seller was Warner’s A Charlie Brown Christmas.

The Blu-ray Disc chart had Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic Pulp Fiction back up to No. 3, thanks to a new 4K Ultra HD edition from Paramount. Pulp Fiction was the top seller in the 4K format for the week, with Top Gun: Maverick at No. 2, and the Clerks III Best Buy exclusive at No. 3.

The No. 4 seller on both the Blu-ray and 4K charts was the collection of both “Top Gun” films, which was re-released Dec. 6 as a lavish gift set with Steelbook combo packs of both films and collectibles. It was No. 26 overall.

With most stores engaged in a variety of holiday-season sales, most of the sales charts were dominated by catalog titles or recent but not exactly new fare. Top Gun: Maverick outsold the No. 2 overall title, Universal Pictures’

Rounding out the top five Blu-ray sellers was Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion, which was No. 10 on the overall sales chart.
