‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Led Disc Sellers in December; ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ No. 1 for 2022
January 13, 2023
Paramount Home Entertainment’s Top Gun: Maverick was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for December 2022, according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions. That’s the second-straight month Maverick as been No. 1 and the expected outcome after the sequel topped the weekly sales charts for nine consecutive weeks since its debut at the beginning of November, a streak that encompassed every week in both months to end the year and wasn’t snapped until the first week of 2023.
Despite such dominance, Maverick still managed to finish only No. 2 for 2022 as a whole, behind Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, which had topped the year-to-date chart pretty much since its Blu-ray and DVD release in April. That Maverick couldn’t dislodge Spidey with its late push speaks more to the relatively weaker market conditions at the time of its release than earlier in the year — Maverick didn’t face much competition in November and December, making it easier for it to retain the No. 1 position on the weekly charts, while No Way Home continued to sell well throughout the year and was buoyed a bit by a theatrical release of an extended cut in September.
Indeed, the remainder of the December top sellers chart was dominated by Christmas catalog titles, with only two movies released on disc during the month selling enough to make the list. Both were from Sony Pictures: the family musical Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile was No. 6, and the historical drama The Woman King was No. 8.
