‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies to Top of Weekly Vudu Chart

Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick flew to the top of the chart of the 10 most-popular films on Fandango’s transactional digital service Vudu the week ended Aug. 28.

The sequel, which ranks as Vudu’s most pre-ordered 2022 title to date and is newly available for digital purchase, features Tom Cruise reprising his role as daring pilot Maverick, who is assigned to teach a group of Top Guns how to complete a difficult mission. The Top Gun 2-Movie Collection, which includes the original Top Gun  (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick, ranked as Vudu’s best-selling bundle.

Debuting at No. 2 on the chart was Warner Bros.’ animated DC League of Super-Pets, which became available for premium digital rental and purchase Aug. 23. The film follows Krypto the Super-Dog (voice of Dwayne Johnson) and Superman (John Krasinski), who are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack — Ace the hound (Kevin Hart), PB the potbellied pig (Vanessa Bayer), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne) and Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna) — to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.

Also debuting on the chart, at No. 3, was Jordan Peele’s Nope. The sci-fi thriller, which premiered for premium digital rental Aug. 26, follows two siblings who own a horse farm for Hollywood productions and make a chilling discovery.

It’s the third in the “Jurassic World” franchise and the sixth in the overall “Jurassic” franchise. In the film, set four years after the destruction of Isla Nubar, dinosaurs roam the Earth again.

Falling from No. 3 to No. 5 on the chart was Universal Pictures’ Minions: The Rise of Gru, the latest installment in the Illumination animated series. The film, which tells the story of 12-year-old Gru’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain, is available for premium digital purchase and rental.

The only other title to debut on the chart for the week was Jo Koy’s comedy Easter Sunday at No. 7.
