‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies to Top of DVD and Blu-ray Sales Charts

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Top Gun: Maverick easily debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended Nov. 5.

The film, which finds Tom Cruise returning as his character from 1986’s Top Gun to train a new generation of fighter pilots, had no trouble carrying over its theatrical clout to the physical media home entertainment market following its $716.7 million domestic box office haul.

Top Gun: Maverick was so dominant it even got a piece of No. 2 on both charts, in the form of a two-movie “Top Gun” collection that sold 8% as many copies as the standalone movie.

Compared with both of those, the remaining 48 of the top 50 disc sellers combined mustered only 62% as many unit sales as discs containing a copy of Top Gun: Maverick (and about 2% of that group’s sales were of the original Top Gun, which ranked No. 6 on the overall sales chart).

Blu-ray Disc formats accounted for 65% of total Top Gun: Maverick unit sales, with 40% from regular Blu-ray and 25% from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The two-movie set, which was released only on Blu-ray formats, had 55% of its sales from the 4K version.

On top of that, the preorders of Top Gun: Maverick would have been enough to give it the top spot a week earlier as well.

The previous week’s top seller, Universal Pictures’ Jordan Peele thriller Nope, dropped to No. 3 on both charts, selling about 4% as many copies in its second week as the newcomer.

That, in turn, pushed Sony Pictures’ Brad Pitt actioner Bullet Train to No. 4  and Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder to No. 5 on both charts.
