In time for Father’s Day, Time Life on May 15 will release a three-DVD set, The Jackie Gleason Show in Color: Deluxe Edition, featuring 12 never-before-released episodes from his hit 1960s variety show.
“The Jackie Gleason Show” ran from 1966 to 1970 and was highlighted by Gleason and sidekick Art Carney reviving their working-class “Honeymooners” characters, bus driver Ralph Kramden and sewer worker Ed Norton, from the short-lived but iconic 1950s sitcom of the same name.
The new “Honeymooners” segments presented the show in color, unlike the original “Classic 39,” which were all black-and-white.
Taped in Miami Beach, “The Jackie Gleason Show” also featured a bevy of guests, including Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Tony Bennett, Red Buttons, Phil Silvers, Florence Henderson, Frankie Avalon, Nipsey Russell, Edie Adams, Sid Caesar, Alan King, Robert Goulet, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Victor Borge.
The 12 shows included on the three-DVD set, which carries a suggested retail price of $29.95, have been remastered and include seven unreleased “Honeymooners” sketches that haven’t been seen since they first aired, including “Six Months To Live,” “Alice’s Birthday,” “Lawsuit,” “Hot Tip,” “The New Bowling Ball,” “Norton Moves In,” and “The New Manager.”
