On this week’s episode of the Media Play News podcast, hosts Charles Parkman and Charlie Showley cover the John Latchem-penned reviews of the quirky live action/animated Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and docuseries “Light & Magic,” about the studio that pioneered effects for Star Wars, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and many other influential Hollywood films. Charles remembers back to being pleasantly surprised with the first Sonic when it released in early 2020 as one of the last movies he saw in theaters before coronavirus shut everything down, and thinks that the sequel surpassed it in just about every way. Charlie, having only played the video games the property is based on, tries to keep up.
The hosts also cover the continuing summer box office slump, with Bullet Train remaining No. 1 movie of the past weekend despite barely cracking $13 million. Top Gun: Maverick rose back up to No. 2, bringing its domestic total to $673 million and approaching $1.38 billion worldwide. Finally, the latest news in the streaming space has Walmart bundling Paramount+ with its Walmart+ service as an incentive and HBO/HBO Max experiencing layoffs as its merger with Discovery+ continues.
