This Week’s MPN Podcast: ‘Jurassic World Dominion,’ ‘The Orville: New Horizons’ Reviews; ‘House of the Dragon’ a Streaming Sensation

On this week’s episode of the Media Play News podcast, hosts Charles Parkman and Charlie Showley cover the latest reviews by John Latchem: Jurassic World Dominion, the final movie in the “Jurassic World” trilogy, and season three of “The Orville,” having moved to Hulu with a larger budget and dubbed “New Horizons.” Charles, having recently watched all previous “Jurassic Park” movies, has some thoughts about the parallels between the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy and Jurassic World Dominion, while Charlie remains skeptical of the entire franchise other than the very first Jurassic Park. “The Orville,” on the other hand, appears to be boldly developing a more serious stance relative to its origins as a “Star Trek” parody show, which both hosts agree is a great direction for it to take.

The late-summer box office slump has yet to abate, with the top-grossing movie in the United States this past weekend being the anime Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The stylish Brad Pitt action comedy Bullet Train continues its modest run, while Top Gun: Maverick is still hanging around near the top of the chart. Charlie comments on how this reminds him of when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King remained in theaters for several months and broke a Guinness World Record for “fastest movie to make $1 billion,” which took 11 weeks. The biggest movies these days can crack that number in less than two weeks.  The weekly Media Play News podcast wraps up with a quick recap of the popular debut of “Game of Thrones” spin-off, “House of the Dragon,” the latest streaming sensation to draw audiences like a magnet to their TVs for an extended binge-watch session.
