Universal Pictures’ The Grinch debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended Feb. 9.
The animated adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss story earned $270.6 million at the domestic box office.
The action-thriller Widows, from 20th Century Fox, debuted at No. 2 on both charts, selling 18% as many copies as The Grinch.
No. 3 on both charts was Sony Pictures’ The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the adaptation of the fourth book in the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series, and the first not written by series creator Stieg Larsson.
The previous weeks’ top seller, Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, dropped to No. 4, while Lionsgate’s Hunter Killer slipped to No. 5.
Blu-ray Disc accounted for 66% of first-week Grinch sales, with 6% of total sales attributed to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions. Widows had 51% of total sales in the Blu-ray format, but 10% from UHD Blu-ray. Blu-ray accounted for 62% of The Girl in the Spider’s Web sales.
The Media Play News rental chart for the week ended Feb. 10 also had The Grinch at No. 1, Widows at No. 2 and Spider’s Web at No. 3. The previous week’s top rental, Hunter Killer, slipped to No. 4, while the 20th Century Fox Western The Sisters Brothers debuted at No. 5.
