‘The Croods: A New Age’ Grabs Top Spot on Disc Sales Charts for Fourth Week

Universal Pictures’ The Croods: A New Age remained No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended March 20. The double feature set of both “Croods” movies dropped a spot to No. 4 on both charts.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures’ video game adaptation Monster Hunter held on the No. 2 spot on both charts for the third consecutive week, selling about half as many copies as the DreamWorks Animation sequel.

The dearth in a high volume of new releases being offered at retail has resulted not only in a lack of turnover in the top spots the previous few weeks, but also a rise in catalog titles moving back up the charts as stores conduct a number of clearance and deep-discount sales.

The No. 3 overall disc seller was Universal’s Neighbors 2-Movie Collection, a 2016 DVD-only release that can be had for as low as $5 at sites such as Amazon.com. No. 5 overall was 2018’s The House With a Clock in Its Walls, also from Universal, which had just 1% of its sales come from Blu-ray so it didn’t appear on the top 25 Blu-ray chart.

The week’s top newcomer was another Universal Pictures release, Oscar nominee Promising Young Woman, which arrived at No. 8 on the overall disc chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The film, which stars Carey Mulligan as a young woman on a mission of revenge after her bright prospects for the future were derailed by a mysterious event, has earned $5.8 million at the domestic box office and $10.9 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film among the eight Best Picture Oscar nominees in the pandemic-hampered release year. Promising Young Woman had 60% of its total sales come from the Blu-ray format.

The No. 5 Blu-ray Disc seller was Mill Creek Entertainment’s new Steelbook edition of the 1986 BMX racing movie Rad starring Bill Allen, Lori Loughlin, Talia Shire and Ray Walston.
