ViacomCBS Completes Majority Stake Acquisitions of Fox TeleColombia and Estudios TeleMexico

ViacomCBS Nov. 23 announced that its ViacomCBS Networks International unit closed the acquisition of a majority stake in the Spanish language content producer Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico from The Walt Disney Company. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will bolster ViacomCBS’s Spanish-language content production capabilities and expand ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) to capitalize on significant content demand on its global streaming platforms, Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and its linear networks around the world.

VIS will operate Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico as a collaborative partnership with the founding family. Samuel Duque Duque will lead the business. Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will fall under the direction of Juan “JC” Acosta, president of ViacomCBS International Studios and Networks Americas.

ViacomCBS to Acquire Stake in Spanish-Language Content Producer

ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in the Spanish-language content producer Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico from The Walt Disney Co. and the founding family of Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico.

ViacomCBS International Studios’ VIS, a division of VCNI, will operate Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico as a collaborative partnership with the founding family. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Through this transaction, VCNI will gain access to Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico’s studio operations in both Colombia and Mexico, as well as many hours of library content, including premium series, telenovelas, films, documentaries, unscripted, kids and family, branded and digital content, and live sports shows produced for various audiences. This content will fuel ViacomCBS’s global streaming platforms including Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and its linear networks around the world, according to the company. Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will also bolster ViacomCBS’ Spanish-language content production capabilities to capitalize on significant content demand in the region and worldwide, the company noted.

“The acquisition of Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico, combined with ViacomCBS’s existing Spanish-language portfolio including Telefe and Chilevisión, reinforces the company’s position as a leading worldwide producer of Spanish-language content,” Raffaele Annecchino, president and CEO, ViacomCBS Networks International, said in a statement. “This content will fuel ViacomCBS’ global ecosystem across Paramount+, Pluto TV and its linear networks.”

Rozo will continue to exclusively support the business from a creative and strategic advisory position, and Samuel Duque Duque, current president, will lead the business. Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will fall under the remit of Juan “JC” Acosta, President of ViacomCBS International Studios and Networks Americas.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

ViacomCBS International Studios Inks Deal With Miramax to Co-Produce ‘The Turkish Detective’

ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) June 24 announced an agreement with Miramax to co-produce “The Turkish Detective,” a series set in modern-day Istanbul based on the 21-novel series The Cetin Ikmen Crime Novels by Barbara Nadel. The deal marks the first co-production between ViacomCBS and subsidiary Miramax, which is jointly owned by beIN Media Group.

The Turkish Detective depicts the lead character Inspector Cetin Ikmen and his partner Mehmet Suleyman solving crimes and experiencing euphoric highs and tragic lows. Each crime story in the series is heavily rooted in the rich and varied culture and history of Istanbul and set against the vibrant, dazzling and frenzied world of modern-day Turkey.

Production will begin in Spring 2021 in Istanbul. Each episode will be 60-minutes, and the series will be developed as a global product that will be sold to third-party distributors.

Marc Helwig, head of worldwide television at Miramax, called author Barbara Nadel “a terrific writer,” whose page-turning novels combine “beautifully honed” storytelling with an authentic sense of place.

“I am thrilled that we are partnering with VIS to bring this hugely successful series to a global audience,” Helwig said.

The series was first announced at the MIPCOM market in Cannes, France last year as part of a larger announcement surrounding ViacomCBS International Studios U.K.’s move into scripted development.
