Japanese Horror Film ‘Evil Dead Trap’ Due on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 24 From MVD

The 1988 Japanese horror flick Evil Dead Trap will come out on Blu-ray and DVD Aug. 24 from MVD Entertainment Group and Unearthed Films.

In the slasher, a TV station employee takes a camera crew out to an abandoned factory to investigate a purported snuff film that was made there, only to end up running for her life. Nami, who hosts a late night home video program, receives a tape which appears to be a real snuff film. She and her crew investigate the location where she meets a man looking for his brother who warns her to stay away.

Hong Kong Horror Film ‘The Untold Story’ Due on Disc Oct. 13 From MVD

Unearthed Films and MVD Entertainment Group will release the restored Hong Kong horror film The Untold Story for the first time in the U.S. on DVD and Blu-ray Oct. 13.

The notorious Category 3 film is the grisly tale of a killer. In 1978 in Hong Kong, a murder takes place. Eight years later on a Macao beach, kids discover the severed hands of a fresh victim. A squadron of cops investigate and suspicion falls on Wong Chi Hang, the new owner of The Eight Immortals Restaurant famous for its delicious pork buns. The hands belong to the missing mother of the restaurant’s former owner who has disappeared along with the rest of his family. Staff at the restaurant continue to go missing but the police can’t find any hard evidence that Wong is responsible. When he can’t produce a bill of sale proving his purchase of the restaurant, Wong is arrested and the police try to torture him into a confession.

The film is written by and starring Danny Lee (City on Fire, Dr. Lamb), stars Anthony Wong (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Ip Man: The Final Fight, Ebola Syndrome, Hard Boiled) and is directed by Herman Yau (Ebola Syndrome, Taxi Hunter). Wong was awarded the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor Award for his performance.

Horror Film ‘Gutterballs’ Rolls to Disc From MVD

The horror film Gutterballs is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Unearthed Films and MVD Entertainment Group.

It’s the first time the film has been released on Blu-ray.

In the film, a brutally sadistic rape leads to a series of bizarre gory murders during a midnight disco bowl-a-rama at a popular bowling alley. One by one, players of two teams meet blood-drenched gruesome deaths at the hand of a black bowling-gloved masked killer.

After Gutterballs was submitted to the MPAA Rating Board, the film was released unrated after the director was told that almost 20 minutes would have to be cut to avoid an ‘NC-17’ rating. The film has a total of 516 uses of the F-word, ranking it fourth of all time for total usage of the F-word in a motion picture.

The film is directed by Ryan Nicholson (Torched) whose special effects work can be seen on “The X-Files,” “The Outer Limits,” “Stargate” and “Andromeda.”

Bonuses include a making-of featurette, interviews and outtakes.

Horror Film ‘Famine’ Served Up This Month on Blu-ray From MVD

The comic splatterfest Famine is available now on Blu-ray from MVD Entertainment Group and Unearthed Films.

The film occurs two years after a high-school prank that nearly killed popular teacher Mr. Balszack during the school’s annual famine. The graduating class of Sloppy Secondary is trying to forget the incident and decides to hold a 24-hour famine in hopes of making it an annual event again. Soon, students and staff start turning up dead at the hands of a killer masquerading as the school’s mascot.

Special features include a commentary with director Ryan Nicholson, a still gallery and trailers.

Horror Film ‘Nightwish’ Due on Disc Aug. 27 From MVD

The horror film Nightwish is coming to Blu-ray and DVD Aug. 27 from MVD Entertainment Group and Unearthed Classics.

In the film, using sensory deprivation techniques, a doctor of parapsychology provokes his students to examine their own deaths in evermore horrifying circumstances. Roles are exchanged and shuffled as reality and fantasy become indistinguishable and each new dreadful death proves more terrifying than the last. Their paranormal explorations lead them to an abandoned mansion in a desolate area that natives call the “Valley of Fear” where years of drinking chemically tainted water have led to a genetically damaged population and mutant wildlife. Local legends also tell stranger stories of extraterrestrials, which the students attempt to explore.

1980s Horror Film ‘The Unnamable’ Coming to Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 23 From Unearthed Films and MVD

The Unnamable, a 1980s horror film based on the H.P. Lovecraft story, will come out on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 23 from Unearthed Films and MVD Entertainment Group.

The film follows college students who retreat to an early 18th century mansion for a weekend of lust and are stalked by a female demon who delights in tearing the limbs off her human victims to carry out a centuries-old family curse.

Special features include:

  • A video interview with actors Charles Klausmeyer and Mark Kinsey Stephenson;
  • A video interview with actor Eben Ham;
  • A video interview with actor Laura Albert;
  • A video interview with actor Mark Parra;
