‘True Detective: Night Country’ Due on Blu-ray and DVD July 9

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has slated HBO’s True Detective: Night Country for Blu-ray and DVD release July 9. The fourth season of the “True Detective” procedural anthology is already available for digital purchase and can be streamed on Max.

The six-episode season stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in Alaska investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. The cast also includes John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc and Joel D. Montgrand.

Reelgood: ‘The Holdovers,’ ‘True Detective’ Return Atop Weekly Streaming Charts Through Feb. 14

Max’s latest reboot of “True Detective” returned atop the weekly top 10 streamed TV shows, with Peacock’s Oscar-nominated The Holdovers No. 1 among feature-length films, according to new data from Reelgood.com, which tracks real-time data of 20 million interactions each month on reelgood.com and related app in the United States across SVOD and AVOD services for original and acquired streaming programs and movies.

“True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, replaced last week’s No. 1 — Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.

Oscar-nominated movies continued to resonate among streamers with Past Lives (Paramount+), Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV+), Prime Video’s Saltburn and Netflix’s Society of the Snow all finishing in the top 10.

‘True Detective: Night Country’ Episode Five to Hit Max Before HBO

Episode five of the HBO Original drama series “True Detective: Night Country” will be available to stream early on Max beginning Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST in advance of its HBO linear premiere on Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

The season finale will debut Feb. 18 at the same time on HBO and Max.

In the series, when the long winter night falls in Ennis, Ala., the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

The series also stars Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc and John Hawkes with guest stars Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna and Joel D. Montgrand.

Following the 96th Academy Awards nominations, there were a lot of similarities between popular streaming titles and Oscar nominations. Industry award favorites remaining on the chart included Barbie (Max), Society of the Snow (Netflix), Past Lives and sci-fi thriller The Creator (Paramount+), and Killers of the Flower Moon and Saltburn (Prime Video).

“True Detective: Night Country,” had a new runner-up in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which is streaming on Prime Video, followed by the new Apple TV+ World War II action series “Masters of the Air.”

HBO Reclaims Primetime Emmy Award Nominations Lead from Netflix

HBO July 16 received a record-breaking 137 Primetime Emmy nominations for the upcoming 71st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 22. HBO’s previous record was set in 2015 with 126 nominations.

Netflix in 2018 broke HBO’s 17-year nomination crown with 112 noms compared to 108 noms for HBO.

As expected, “Game of Thrones” again led all shows with 32 nominations, the most of any program, while “Chernobyl” received 19 noms, “Barry” received 17 nominations and “Veep,” “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and “True Detective” each received 9 noms.

HBO will soon spearhead WarnerMedia’s pending subscription streaming service, HBO Max.

HBO Launches SVOD Service in Portugal

HBO launched its newest over-the-top streaming video service, HBO Portugal, bringing all seasons of HBO’s coveted original programming to Portuguese audiences. In addition to originals, HBO Portugal viewers have access to series, films, documentaries and family content from other content providers.

Following a one-month free trial for all new subscribers, HBO Portugal costs €4.99 ($5.64) monthly, allowing subscribers to register five different devices with their subscription and watch two simultaneous streams of dubbed and subtitled content at the same time from the same account.

The service is accessible through a wide range of smartphones, tablets and devices including PCs, LG TV, PlayStation 4, Android TV, Chromecast and Apple TV.

Vodafone Portugal is the exclusive operator partner for local distribution, giving Vodafone Portugal customers access to the streaming service via TV Vodafone.

HBO Portugal subs have access to more than 4,500 episodes of HBO series, including every season “Game of Thrones,” “True Detective,” “Westworld” and “Big Little Lies.”

The service also includes classics shows such as “Sex and the City,” “The Sopranos,” “The Wire” and “Girls.” The service will feature a wide variety of series, movies, documentaries and family content from other content providers, including Showtime, Sundance, SyFy, The CW, AMC Network, DreamWorks and Turner.
