Sony Pictures Joins Drive-In Movie Marketing Bandwagon

Sony Pictures announced it is offering consumers access to branded catalog movies and new releases in a drive-in atmosphere on the studio’s backlot in Culver City, Calif., beginning Aug. 14 and on subsequent Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays thereafter.

Showtimes, which begin at 8 p.m. PT, will be limited to 75 cars paying $30 per vehicle. The movie line-up includes Baby Driver, Bad Boys for Life, Bloodshot, Don’t Breathe, Ghostbusters (1984), Grown Ups, Jumanji: The Next Level, The Karate Kid (1984), Men in Black (1997), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, among others. Tickets will be handled by Atom Tickets.

Sony will also debut The Broken Hearts Gallery, a romantic comedy from executive producer Selena Gomez.

The drive-in campaign, which is similar to marketing efforts currently in operation at 160 Walmart parking lots and select third-party venues into October, is in response to ongoing closures of movie theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tribeca Drive-In Movie Series Bows at Rose Bowl Parking Lot on July 9

The Tribeca Film Festival begins screening studio movies this weekend in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The Tribeca Drive-In Series, which is launching nationwide and will incorporate 160 Walmart parking lots in August, will showcase a variety of modern classics and all-time audience favorites, such as: musicals with Selena, The Bodyguard, and Straight Outta Compton; sports titles such as Creed, Jerry Maguire, Space Jam and Love & Basketball; time travel comedies with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Back to the Future; high-school comedies with Mean Girls and Superbad; ladies’ night with Girls Trip and Bridesmaids; road movies such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and The Fast and the Furious; James Bond tribute with Goldfinger and Casino Royale; and children’s fare with Inside Out, The Lego Movie and Spy Kids.

The series will also feature special filmmaker and talent introductions, live stand-up comedy, new teasers of upcoming film releases and more. at entry, driver and each passenger must show that they have their own mask. Masks will be required anytime a guest leaves the vehicle.

Rules of entry: All tickets are available for online purchase only.
Day-of sales may take place online, pending an event’s availability. A digital ticket will be emailed to upon completion of a purchase.

Only one ticket is required per vehicle regardless of the number of passengers.

The Drive-In will open 60 minutes before the listed show time. It is recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes before the gate time found on tickets. Parking spots will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Oversized and unenclosed vehicles are prohibited, including but not limited to large vans, limousines, mopeds, motorcycles, RVs, scooters, and vehicles with open tops. Pedestrians and bicyclists will not be permitted within the perimeter of the ticketed event site. Only service animals are allowed and must be kept on leash.

Temporary restroom facilities will be available onsite, although it is encouraged to use the restroom before arriving.
