Warner’s ‘Black Adam’ Hits Sluggish Weekend Box Office With $18.5 Million Punch

Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Comics superhero movie Black Adam delivered a projected $18.5 million punch to another slow box office, to up its global take to $250 million after three weekends. While the result counts as another win for Warner, fiscally conservative corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery has to be second-guessing the movie’s reported $195 million production budget.

And with Disney/Marvel Studios’ bowing sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Nov. 11, Black Adam’s window of opportunity could be closing. Regardless, the movie easily topped Crunchyroll’s anime musical One Piece Film: Red, which is set to generate almost $10 million in its North American debut. The movie has already topped $141 million in global ticket sales since its Aug. 6 bow in Japan.

Rounding out the podium is Universal Pictures’ adult romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise, with an estimated $8.5 million in in ticket sales through its third weekend of release. The Julia Roberts/George Clooney movie has topped $137 million in global ticket sales, including more than $46 million across North American screens — strong numbers for a movie with a reported $60 million production budget.

Finally, Halloween might be over, but moviegoers still covet the horror genre. Paramount Pictures’ Smile topped $200 million at the global box office after six weeks in release. The low-budget film has to-date grossed more than $99.1 million domestically and more than $103.8 million internationally for worldwide tally of $202.9 million.

Lionsgate’s Prey for the Devil took in an estimated $3.9 million this weekend. Through Sunday, the film will gross an estimated total of $13.6 million at the box office. The film held strong from last week (down only 46%) and was up better than projected (+49%) from Friday, grossing an estimated $1.7 million yesterday (off only -31% from Oct. 29) and finishing fifth overall in the domestic marketplace on Saturday.
