Borrowing a page from Walmart, the Thousand Trails Campground network announced it is rolling out “Cinema Under the Stars” movie theater program to guests of its RV campgrounds, beginning July 24 and 25 at select campgrounds across the country with more locations added in the coming weeks.
Membership-based Thousand Trails, which operates 80 locations in 22 states and British Columbia and Canada, is attempting to fill a void as theatrical exhibitors remain shuttered due to the pandemic.
Walmart earlier this month announced a partnership with Tribecca Film Institute offering consumers a movie drive-in experience at 160 store locations.
Guests of the selected Thousand Trails campgrounds will be able to pull up their golf cart, lay out a blanket or bring their camping chair and enjoy open air seating and watch a movie on the big screen.
Movies will range from studio new releases to classics and will fit with the campground’s theme weekend or other planned activities at the campground.

“Cinema Under the Stars was a collective effort to continue to accommodate the growing trend of travelers looking for unique, socially distant vacation experiences,” Thousand Trails’ spokeswoman Pat Zamora said in a statement.
Zamora said the outdoor venue enables campground visitors to experience theatrical movies in a social distancing environment.
Select campgrounds are offering state of the art, 16 or 20-foot wide movie screens and equipment to best replicate an outdoor movie experience under the stars.”We have changed things up a bit … but campers are still coming out to enjoy the fresh air and new events like this to have some fun,” Zamora added.
