‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Tops October Disc Sales Chart; ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Still No. 1 for 2022

Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for October 2022, according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions.

The “Thor” sequel had been No. 5 in September despite being available just a few days during the month after its Sept. 27 disc release. It topped the weekly sales charts for three weeks, including the first two weeks of October.

The No. 2 October seller was Sony Pictures’ Bullet Train, released on disc Oct. 18. The actioner starring Brad Pitt was the top weekly seller upon its debut.

Another October disc release, Warner’s DC League of Super-Pets, was No. 3 for the month. The animated film based on DC Comics characters was released on disc Oct. 4.

Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World Dominion, which was No. 2 in September, slid to No. 4 in October.

The No. 5 October seller was Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, which retailers began offering on disc Oct. 31, a day before its announced Nov. 1 street date. That one day of sales was enough to rank it on the monthly chart, and as it subsequently was the top weekly seller for several weeks it will undoubtedly be the top seller for the entire month of November.

The top seller for the month of September, Universal Pictures’ Minions: The Rise of Gru, dropped to No. 7 in October.

The titles in the year-to-date top 10 through October were the same as they were at the end of the previous month, led again by Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The one change was that Paramount’s 1986 original Top Gun inched up one spot to No. 9 for the year, pushing Paramount’s Yellowstone: Season 4 to No. 10.

This Week’s MPN Podcast: ‘Bright Victory,’ ‘Thor’ Reviews; Netflix’s ‘Tudum’ Moment; Weekend Box Office Report

On this week’s episode of the Media Play News podcast, hosts Charles Parkman and Charlie Showley dive into the remastered 1950s classic Bright Victory, followed by the newest MCU movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Unsurprisingly, the hosts have more to say about Thor than a 70-year-old war movie, although Scott Marks’ review of Bright Victory does present some stark differences in cultural norms and script writing relative to modern movies. As for Thor, in spite of John Latchem highlighting the elements that make it a bright, fun movie, Charlie isn’t sold on it because he’s sick of the overbearing lightheartedness of many recent Marvel movies.

At the box office, in spite of (or, perhaps, partly because of) its pre-release controversy, Don’t Worry Darling took the No. 1 spot this past weekend. More interestingly, a theatrical re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home (with a few minutes of deleted scenes spliced back in) appeared in the top 5, and even more astonishingly, Avatar made its return to theaters ahead of its anticipated sequel’s release in December. Both hosts puzzle over the paradox of Avatar having such a tremendous cultural impact when it was initially released in 2009 and soon after vanished from mainstream consciousness.

On the streaming front, Netflix has announced 120 (!) new and continuing movies and shows. Charles and Charlie are looking forward to a few of the offerings, but with that many announcements, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

New Releases for Sept. 27 Include ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ ‘The Munsters’ on Disc, ‘Bullet Train’ on Digital

The week of Sept. 27 finds the Blu-ray and DVD debuts for Thor: Love and Thunder and Rob Zombie’s The Munsters, while Bullet Train becomes available through digital retailers.

Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder arrives on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Sept. 27. The film from director Taika Waititi is the fourth solo “Thor” movie and the 29th Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — one of self-discovery. But his efforts are interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who — to Thor’s surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. The movie generated more than $760 million at the global box office, including $343 million in North America. Read a review here.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment releases director Rob Zombie’s The Munsters on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and for digital purchase Sept. 27. The comedy focuses on the courtship between Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie), a 150-year-old lovelorn vampire, and Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips), a seven-foot-tall green experiment with a heart of gold. However, her father The Count (Daniel Roebuck) has other plans for her future, and they don’t involve her bumbling new beau. The cast also includes Richard Brake, Jorge Garcia, Sylvester McCoy, Catherine Schell, Cassandra Peterson and Tomas Boykin, with special appearances from original “Munsters” cast members Butch Patrick and Pat Priest. Blu-ray and DVD extras include a commentary with Zombie, and the hour-long behind-the-scenes featurette “The Munsters: Return To Mockingbird Lane.”

The release features a new 4K restoration produced from the original, uncut 94-minute version. Rain — a classic that caused controversy when first released — portrays W. Somerset Maugham’s powerful story of Sadie Thompson and is perhaps the most celebrated version. It vividly captures the lives of several very different human beings, thrown together on Pago Pago during a fierce monsoon. Crawford is the cynical prostitute, and Walter Huston is the minister who tries to reform her. Special features include a commentary track by Mick LaSalle, writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and noted film historian; a commentary track by Richard Barrios, writer, historian and commentator; a liner note booklet written by Marc Wannamaker, writer and film historian; the  original theatrical trailer; a poster and photo gallery; a period appropriate Betty Boop cartoon and newsreel; and the alternate 76-minute “cut version” of the 1938 Atlantic Reissue for comparison.

The horror film Sator and the Hungarian cult film Liza The Fox Fairy are headed to Blu-ray Disc Sept. 27 from Cauldron Films and MVD Entertainment Group.

In Sator, secluded in a desolate forest, home to little more than the decaying remnants of the past, a broken family is further torn apart by a mysterious death. Adam (Gabriel Nicholson), guided by a pervasive sense of dread, hunts for answers only to learn that they are not alone; an insidious presence by the name of Sator has been observing his family, subtly influencing all of them for years in an attempt to claim them. Shot in the Santa Cruz mountains and drawing from a grandmother’s real life belief in a protective spirit that spoke to her, Sator quietly unspools a story of isolation and dread that fits firmly into the recent wave of unsettling arthouse horror. Special features include a behind-the-scenes featurette and director’s commentary.

In Liza the Fox Fairy, Liza is a lonely nurse whose only company is the ghost of a long-dead Japanese pop-star. Out of jealousy, he turns her into a Fox Fairy and now everyone that is attracted to Liza dies a horrible death. In order to finally find true love, Liza must overcome the curse and defeat the jealousy of her suave, supernatural suitor. Although the film was released in 2015 and played the U.S. festival circuit, Liza has been unavailable on Blu-ray worldwide until now.

Directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit), from a screenplay by Waititi & Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Thor: Love and Thunder was produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum.
