‘The Secret Garden’ Again Tops Weekly U.K. Home Entertainment Chart

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s The Secret Garden retained its No. 1 position on the weekly Official Film Chart in the U.K., with the biggest physical sales tally through March 3. The 2020 adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters, as well as emerging actress Dixie Violet Egerickx in the lead role of Mary Lennox.

The title has spent the past two weeks atop the chart as it led on DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales — with only a few hundred sales between its closest competition.

Following the title announcement of Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, its predecessor Spider-Man: Far From Home shot up to No. 2. Former chart topper Sing (Universal) — and the biggest digital download of the week — held on at No. 3, while Warner’s Roald Dahl’s The Witches dropped to No. 4.

Elton John biopic Rocketman (Paramount) re-emerged on the chart to No. 5, landing just ahead of this week’s highest new entry at No. 6, a limited-edition re-release of 1980’s cult horror Demons Collection 1 & 2. Sci-fi action, and the last film in the Skyline trilogy, Skylines (Vertical Entertainment) at No. 7.

Despicable Me 3 (Universal) dropped to No. 8, The Greatest Showman (20th Century) rebounded to No. 9, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s  Jumanji: The Next Level fell four places to No. 10.

This week’s Official Film Chart online show features a preview of Gal Gadot in Warner’s Wonder Woman 1984, which is available in the U.K. to “Download & Keep” from March 8, having previously been only available at a premium rental price.

‘The Secret Garden’ Blossoms on U.K. Home Entertainment Chart

The Secret Garden finished No. 1 on the U.K. weekly Official Film Chart through Feb. 24 following its release on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The 2020 adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters, as well as emerging actress Dixie Violet Egerickx in the lead role of Mary Lennox.

The Universal Pictures Home Entertainment release knocked off the previous week’s chart-topper, 2016 animated musical Sing, which fell to No. 3, while Warner’s Roald Dahl’s The Witches held on at No. 2. Also holding firm were Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Spider-Man: Far From Home (No. 4) and Universal’s Despicable Me 3 (No. 5).

Jumanji: The Next Level (No. 6) and Trolls World Tour (No. 7) both dropped one spot to land just ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog, which rocketed up 14 spots to No. 8, returning to the Top 10 for the first time since October.

Sci-fi actioner Anti-Life (known as Breach in the U.S.) claimed the chart’s highest new entry at No. 9. Bruce Willis stars as a senior mechanic on an interstellar ark facing a brand-new threat: a shape-shifting alien force intent on slaughtering what remains of humanity. Finally, former No. 1 The Greatest Showman dropped seven spots to No. 10.

‘Tax Collector,’ ‘Secret Garden’ Top Weekly Slate of New Disc Releases; ‘Mulan’ Now Available Through Other Digital Retailers

RLJ Entertainment’s surprise hit The Tax Collector and Universal Pictures’ The Secret Garden top the slate of new disc releases available Oct. 6, while the Walt Disney Co.’s live-action Mulan remake becomes available through digital retailers such as FandangoNow for purchase at $29.99 after a month-long Disney+ PVOD exclusive.

Also newly available, on Blu-ray Disc and DVD and through digital retailers, is MGM’s remake of the 1983 comedy classic Valley Girl, while 300, from Warner Bros., and Shutter Island, from Paramount, are making their 4K Ultra HD debuts.

The crime drama The Tax Collector was released through digital retailers on Aug. 7 and the following week  debuted at No. 1 on the “Watched at Home” chart, knocking DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour from the top spot it had occupied for five weeks. Directed by David Ayer, the film stars Shia LaBeouf and Bobby Soto as “tax collectors” working for a Los Angeles crime lord who find their safety threatened by a rival of their boss.

STX Films’ The Secret Garden is based on the 1911 fantasy novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Set in England in 1947, the film follows a young orphan girl (Dixie Egerickx) who, after being sent to live with her uncle (Colin Firth), discovers a magical garden on the grounds of his estate. The cast also includes Julie Walters, Isis Davis and Amir Wilson. The film was released through digital retailers on Sept. 22.

Valley Girl, distributed to home audiences by Warner Bros., is a musical romantic comedy from MGM’s Orion Pictures that was directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg. The film stars Jessica Rothe, Mae Whitman and Judy Greer (13 Going on 30Ant-Man27 Dresses) as Diana. The film, a musical romantic comedy adaptation of the 1983 classic starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman, follows a pair of young lovers from different backgrounds who defy their parents and friends to stay together.

Also on Oct. 6, Universal Pictures is releasing American Pie: Girls’ Rules on DVD and through digital retailers. The film is the latest direct-to-video installment in the popular franchise, which began with the 1999 theatrical release of American Pie, about a group of high school boys out to lose their virginity before graduation. Girls’ Rules is the ninth film in the franchise and the first since 2009. It also is the first “American Pie” movie without Eugene Levy, whose career in recent years was reborn with the hit comedy series “Schitt’s Creek.”

‘Secret Garden’ Top New Digital Release; ‘The Secret,’ ‘Most Wanted’ and ‘Beckman’ Debut on Disc

Universal Pictures’ The Secret Garden tops the slate of new digital releases available Sept. 22, while new disc releases on that same date include Lionsgate’s The Secret: Dare to Dream, Paramount’s Most Wanted and Universal’s Beckman.

Also out Sept. 22: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions of Stanley Kubrick’s classic war 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, from Warner Bros., and the 2014 jazz drama Whiplash, from Sony Pictures, along with Blu-ray Disc editions of The Masque of the Red Death and The Vincent Price Collection, both from Shout! Factory.

The Secret: Dare to Dream, available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD a week after its digital release, is a drama based on the 2006 self-help book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The film stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas and was directed by Andy Tennant, from a screenplay by he wrote with Bekah Brunstetter and Rick Parks.

Most Wanted, available Sept. 22 on Blu-ray Disc and through digital retailers, is based on a true story about an investigative journalist (Josh Hartnett) who unravels a twisted entrapment case in which Daniel (Antoine Olivier Pilon) is forced into a dangerous drug deal against his will and is sentenced to 100 years in a Thai prison.  The journalist must track down the shady undercover cops benefiting off the conspiracy, while also fighting for Daniel’s freedom.

And Beckman, a revenge thriller consumers can buy or rent on DVD or through digital retailers, focus on a gun for hire, Aaron Beckman (David A.R. White) who decides to give up his life of crime when his soul cries out for healing, peace, forgiveness and grace. However, his journey toward salvation is cut short when his daughter is kidnapped by a deranged cult leader, and he resorts to his old ways to seek revenge.
