Warner’s ‘Elvis’ Biopic Returns Atop Weekly U.K. Home Entertainment Sales Chart

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment award-winning Elvis biopic returned to the top of the U.K. home entertainment sales chart for the week ended Jan. 18. The month has been an emotionally trying time for the Elvis Presley legacy, including the legend’s 88th birthday on Jan. 8, the movie’s  success at the Golden Globes and the untimely passing of Presley’s lone child, Lisa Marie, just days later.

Following Austin Butler’s Globes win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama portraying Elvis, the biopic saw a rise in both digital retail and physical sales, according to the Official Film Chart.

That meant that Paramount Home Entertainment’s perennial chart-topper Top Gun: Maverick dropped to the No. 2 spot, while critically-acclaimed dark comedy-drama The Banshees of Inisherin moved up to No. 3 as the most-downloaded film of the week. Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, the movie generated extra consumer attention following its three Globe wins (and eight nominations) for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Actor (Farrell) and Best Screenplay.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s book adaptation Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile moved up five spots to No. 4, while Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Jurassic World Dominion ended the period at No. 5, and the studio’s The Croods: A New Age returned to the top 10 at No. 6.

Paramount’s drama-fantasy book adaptation The Lovely Bones, originally released in 2009, moved into the top 10 for the very first time, finishing in the No. 7 spot.

Rounding out the chart were chart Warner’s regulars The Batman (No. 8) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (No. 9), followed by Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home (No. 10).

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife scored a third week as the U.K.’s No. 1 home entertainment movie release. The title, starring Paul Rudd, maintained its lead based on digital sales. Bridging the gap, however, was Warner’s Dune in the No. 2 spot.

Dreamworks Animation’s sequel The Boss Baby: Family Business dropped two spots at No. 6 in its third week on the chart, while Universal’s Halloween Kills held the No. 7 spot. Disney/Marvel’s Eternals finished No. 8, while Universal’s Nobody, starring Bob Odenkirk, held at No. 9.

Finally, the chart’s highest new entry of the week featured STX Entertainment’s Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Speeds to No.1 on U.K. Official Film Chart

Packaged media proved to be the perfect spark to push Paramount Home Entertainment’s Sonic the Hedgehog to the top of the U.K. Official Film Chart through June 17.

The video game adaptation entered the chart in April at No. 3 when it was released on digital download early due to the COVID-19 crisis. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Bloodshot returned to the chart in the fifth spot following its release on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and 4K UHD.

Bloodshot, which stars Vin Diesel, was first released digitally in March, two weeks after its theatrical bow. Entertainment One’s Oscar-winning war drama 1917 jumped to No. 2, while the previous week’s No. 1, Dolittle (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment) fell to No. 3, and Disney’s Onward dropped to No. 4.
