Merchandising: ‘Spiral’ Steelbook at Best Buy

The list of new releases for July 20 wasn’t too extensive, with the only notable theatrical release making its way to disc being Lionsgate’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw.

In fact, some Southern California Target and Walmart locations didn’t even bother updating their new-release shelves with the latest entry in the “Saw” franchise.

Best Buy offered a Steelbook edition of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray combo pack, at $29.99.

Best Buy also began a summer movie sale in which shoppers can buy one movie from a select list and get a second for 50% off.

Lionsgate’s ‘Spiral’ Heading to Starz in October

Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures’ horror thriller Spiral: From The Book of Saw will launch exclusively in its U.S. Pay 1 window on the premium subscription platform Starz on Oct. 8. In time for Halloween, the launch will be followed by the early arrival of the entire “Saw” franchise on Starz as part of Lionsgate’s new theatrical output agreement with its subsidiary.

Spiral, the latest installment of the “Saw” franchise starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, has been the No. 1 film at the pandemic-addled U.S. box office two weeks in a row, a first in “Saw” franchise history. The franchise broke the $1 billion mark at the global box office last weekend and is one of the longest-running horror franchises in history.

Spiral centers on Rock, who plays Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks, working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran played by Jackson.  Along with his rookie partner (Max Minghella), Banks takes charge of an investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past.

“The convergence of our studio and platform businesses allows us to create holistic and bespoke release strategies for our films that maximize their potential in every distribution window,” Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution, said in a statement. “By collaborating with our partners at Twisted Pictures and controlling our own destiny, we’re able to bring Spiral to each of its audiences at the perfect time, synchronizing its first pay window debut with the arrival of the rest of the franchise at Halloween.”

‘Saw’ Spinoff ‘Spiral’ Soars in Weekend Box Office Derby

Lionsgate’s horror thriller Spiral, a new chapter in its successful “Saw” franchise, cut its way to the top of the domestic weekend box office with a projected $8.7 million in revenue across 2,811 screens from May 14 to 16. The movie, starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella as law enforcement officials on the trail of a grisly killer, added an additional $3.3 million internationally.

The weekend gross underscored ongoing sluggishness among domestic movie theaters operating at 65% seating capacity to an unsure consumer during a pandemic. Spiral’s opening weekend paled in comparison to the previous “Saw” movie, 2017’s Jigsaw, which grossed $16.6 million in its opening weekend. The amount was still good enough to drive the franchise near the $1 billion threshold in total box office.

Jason Statham’s Wrath of Man dropped to No. 2, generating $3.7 million in ticket sales; $14.6 overall. When factoring in another $7.1 million in the film’s Chinese debut; $13.5 million internationally, the Guy Ritchie-directed vigilante actioner has generated $56 million in revenue.

Angelina Jolie’s actioner, Those Who Wish Me Dead, debuted No. 3 with $2.8 million across 3,188 screens. The paltry opening was driven by limited marketing and mixed reviews, suggestingmore viewers might be willing to stream the title concurrently on HBO Max.

Other movies playing in the U.S., included former Funimation chart topper Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, with $1.85 million in ticket sales, $42 million total domestically. Rounding out the Top 5 was Disney’s venerable Raya and the Last Dragon, which generated another $1.72 million, $46.1 million since its theatrical debut.
