DEG Credits New Initiatives With Drawing 26 New Members This Year

DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group is entering its 25th year with an influx of new members, the trade group announced Dec. 2.

The newest DEG members include Altman Solon, Anuvu, BIGtoken, Guts + Data, IRIS.TV, NAGRA, Omdia, Plex, Synamedia, TiVo, Visual Data Media Services, Vobile and ZOO Digital. Spherex also returned as a member of DEG, bringing the number of new DEG member companies to 26 so far in 2021 (a total that includes 12 new members announced at the end of the first quarter).

DEG’s Direct-to-Consumer Alliance (D2CA), created in 2019, and Advanced Content Delivery Alliance (ACDA), new this year, play an increasingly important role in focusing DEG membership for the future and attracting new members across a broad swath of the digital entertainment industry, according to the trade group.

“DEG’s wide reach across content creators, retailers, platforms and strategic vendors is an important part of its value to members, bringing companies in different industry segments together to work within DEG to advance industry positions and meet common goals,” said DEG chair Jim Wuthrich, president of content distribution for WarnerMedia. “The D2C Alliance and the Advanced Content Delivery Alliance are the latest examples of this community building, and I’m thrilled that so many new members see the value in DEG. I’m happy to welcome all of the new member companies to the DEG community.”

The new ACDA within DEG addresses advancements in technology to enable more and improved content delivery. ACDA member companies are aligned in committees addressing localization, supply chain efficiencies and security, cloud/edge computing and 5G.

The D2C Alliance represents the global direct-to-consumer media industry and supports its members to help create a robust marketplace to lead the new era of content consumption.

DEG Slates Virtual Expo on ‘Localization’ on Thursday, June 17

DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group this week will host a DEG Expo on the rapidly growing business of content localization, including viewpoints from content owners and technology providers.

The virtual event, called “The Expanding World of Localization,” will be held Thursday, June 17, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT.

Featured speakers include Mark Howorth, president of the Iyuno-SDI Group, who will discuss the state of the localization industry. Dolby’s Tom McAndrew, senior technical manager of content relations, and Javier Foncillas, VP of commercial partnerships for Europe, will speak about the global demand for immersive audio.

An executive roundtable led by Vuulr CEO Americas Thomas Hughes will discuss the potential and pain points for localization, including workflows, terminology, talent management, DEI and the role of AI in content localization. Participants include James Hurrell, head of content and localization, global operations, for  BBC Studios; Chris Reynolds, EVP and GM of worldwide localization and fulfillment at Deluxe; Gray Ainsworth, EVP of global technical operations and servicing at Lionsgate; and Andrea Sconza, director of localization services at Vubiquity. More perspective on innovating with AI will be shared by Craig Seidel, CTO of Pixelogic, in conversation with Spherex CEO Teresa Phillips and Respeecher CEO Alex Serdiuk.

OTT.X to Host Career and Leadership Development Summit

OTT.X on July 28 announced plans to host its first-ever Career and Leadership Development Summit on Aug. 12, using an online format similar to its popular “OTT.X Online Live” sessions.

The summit will feature three components, including a conference session with career and leadership development presentations delivered by successful executives; a series of informal discussion sessions between industry executives and conference attendees; and a “happy-hour” networking session.

Featured speakers include industry veterans Steve Nickerson, formerly of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Toshiba Corp.; Jason Peterson, chairman of the GoDigital Media Group; and Michele Edelman, head of growth with Premiere Video.

Other speakers include Teresa Philips, CEO of Spherex; Narendra Reddy, EVP and GM of The Africa Channel; and Paulette Pantoja, CEO of Blu; Jill Allen, SVP of digital distribution for Sony Pictures; Beth Anderson, AVP of digital strategy and business development for BBC Studios; Allison Martin, senior manager of content planning for BBC Studios; Kristen Bedno, director of domestic distribution and marketing for Vision Films; Lise Romanoff, managing director and CEO of worldwide distribution for Vision Films; and Lonni Silverman, director of client services, for Sony Pictures.

To create an inclusive and diverse community of participants, women and minorities are especially encouraged to register and attend, Fisher said. The morning conference portion of the event is free for all OTT industry professionals. Afternoon discussion and networking sessions are free to any employee of an OTT.X member organization.

The conference is being hosted by OTT.X’s Leadership Development Foundation (LDF), an organization dedicated to the vision of a diverse and inclusive business and technical workforce in the OTT video entertainment industry, supported by a broad range of career and leadership development opportunities. The LDF is overseen by a steering committee with representatives from content providers, channels, retailers and service providers in the OTT video industry.
