1993 Cult Classic ‘Matinee’ Arrives on 4K UHD + Blu-ray Combo Pack June 25

Director Joe Dante’s 1993 cult comedy classic Matinee will be issued in a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Disc combo pack on June 25 by Shout! Studios.

The release features a 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negative, supervised by the director himself, as well as several hours of bonus content, including new interviews with the actors.

Fans of the retro comedy who order the film in advance of its release from ShoutFactory.com will receive exclusive 18” x 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork (while supplies last).

Matinee stars John Goodman as the William Castle-inspired movie promoter Lawrence Woolsey, who brings his unique brand of flashy showmanship to the unsuspecting residents of Key West, Florida, in 1962. Teenage fan Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton) can’t wait for the arrival of Woolsey, who is in town to promote his latest offering of atomic power gone berserk, Mant! But the absurd vision of Woolsey’s tale takes on a sudden urgency as the Cuban Missile Crisis places the real threat of atomic horror just 90 miles off the coast. With the help of Woolsey’s leading lady, Ruth (Cathy Moriarty), the master showman gives Key West a premiere they’ll never forget.

The film also features Jesse White, best remembered as for his long-running role in the Maytag repairman TV commercial, in his final theatrical film appearance.

The new 4K restoration on disc one is presented in Dolby Vision And Dolby Atmos and features a new audio commentary by film critics Drew McWeeny and Eric Vespe.

Disc two features a new restoration on regular Blu-ray Disc with additional extras that include a new interviews with actors Kellie Martin, Cathy Moriarty, David Clennon and Lisa Jakub; director Dante; editor Marshall Harvey; director of photography John Hora; and production designer Steven Legler. The disc also includes a making-of featurette, behind-the-scenes footage, deleted and extended scenes; a still gallery; and other extras.

Shout! Studios Sets ‘Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning’ Home Release Dates

Shout! Studios has set a June 11 disc and digital home release date for Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning, the 2023 movie based on the original TV sequel series from the Digimon anime franchise, turns 25 this year.

Available for the first time in the United States and Canada, the Blu-ray+DVD combo pack includes the original Japanese and English dub movie presentations, numerous bonus features, and a limited edition Digimon Liberator promotion pack that includes a randomized wrapped card — one of six possible cards from the new Digimon Card Game deck commemorating the upcoming Digimon Liberator webcomic.

The announcement comes two months after Shout! Studios and celebrated anime studio Toei Animation Inc. announced a multiyear partnership for the film’s North American home entertainment distribution rights.

Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning enjoyed a two-day U.S. theatrical release in November by Toei Animation and Fathom Events. Based on the TV sequel series “Digimon Adventure 02” and its new cast of children that aired in 2000, the movie is a contemporary continuation of the series, with the DigiDestined children now young adults. The film was directed by Tomohisa Taguchi from a script by Akatsuki Yamatoya, with production by Toei Animation.

The home entertainment release features an English dub produced by Toei Animation specifically for the U.S. theatrical run. The English voice cast includes Brian Donovan, who voiced the character Daisuke Motomiya in the TV series, along with Jeannie Tirado, Bryce Papenbrook, Tara Sands, Johnny Yong Bosch, and Derek Stephen Prince.

The film is set in 2012, 10 years since the adventure in the Digital World. Daisuke Motomiya is now 20, and he and the rest of the DigiDestined seem to be changing bit by bit in terms of appearance and lifestyle. Then, one day, a giant Digitama suddenly appears in the sky over Tokyo Tower. Daisuke and the others encounter a mysterious young man named Lui Ohwada, who informs them that he’s the first-ever DigiDestined in the world.

Chonda Pierce Comedy ‘Roll With It’ Rolling Out to DVD, Digital June 25

Shout! Studios has announced a June 25 home release date for the family comedy Roll With It, starring Christian comic Chonda Pierce.

The film will be released on DVD and on transactional digital platforms on June 25. 

The DVD edition includes the original trailer as well as an exclusive blooper reel.

Written and directed by Chris Dowling, Roll With It stars Pierce as a single mother who, with help from her friends, adjust to life after the loss of her husband. The cast also includes Judith Hoag, McKaley Miller, Evan Hofer, Carl McDowell, and others Mark Christopher Lawrence.

Pierce, whose career highlights include platinum-certified comedy albums and five Daytime Emmy nominations, wrote the script for Roll With It with her late husband, David Pierce, and serves as the film’s executive producer, alongside her longtime manager, Andrew Tenenbaum. Christian music stars Michael W. Smith, Shari Rigby, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and others make cameo appearances.

Roll With It premiered in theaters across the U.S. as a three-day event by Fathom Events. It also won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Dallas International Film Festival.

1991 Neo-Noir Crime Drama ‘Affliction’ to Make Blu-ray Disc Debut April 16

Shout! Studios will release the 1997 neo-noir crime drama Affliction on Blu-ray Disc on April 16

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver), the film, which stars Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, James Coburn and Willem Dafoe, has never before been available on the high-definition optical disc format.

In Affliction, Boston University professor Whitehouse tells of the events leading up to the disappearance of his older brother, Wade, a small-town police officer. Wade had been investigating an accidental shooting he believes may have been a murder, and gets so wrapped up in the investigation that he winds up with a total mental collapse, leading to erratic actions, two more killings and the sudden disappearance.

The film, released theatrically by Lionsgate, was hailed by critics but underperformed at the box office, earning just $6 million, a little less than its budget. At the 71st Academy Awards, Nolte was nominated for Best Actor and Coburn won Best Supporting Actor honors. The film also earned six nominations at the 14th Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature.

 

Revenge Thriller ‘Rolling Thunder’ Due April 23 in 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Disc Combo Pack

Shout! Studios has announced the April 23 release of the 1977 revenge thriller Rolling Thunder in a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Disc combo pack.

The film, directed by John Flynn, is coming to disc under the Shout! Select line.

The film, which stars William Devane (in his first lead role) and Tommy Lee Jones, comes to disc through a new 4K transfer from the 35mm original camera negative. Bonus features include a new audio commentary with screenwriter and novelist Heywood Gould and author/film historian C. Courtney Joyner, a second new audio commentary with filmmakers Jackson Stewart and Francis Galluppi, a new interview with Joyner called “Lean And Mean: The Early Films Of John Flynn,” and a new interview with composer Barry De Vorzon.

In the film, which was released theatrically by American International Pictures, Major Charles Rane (Devane) returns home to San Antonio, Texas, and is given a hero’s welcome. He and his friend John Vohden (Jones) had endured eight years of physical and mental torture in a POW camp. Adjusting to his old life isn’t going to be easy for Rane. His wife, Janet, has fallen in love with another man, and his son doesn’t remember him. The publicity he receives as a returning hero has attracted the attention of a group of hoodlums. When the group kills Rane’s wife and son and leaves him for dead, he and Vohden team up to hunt them down.

Animated Irish Film ‘Puffin Rock and New Friends’ to Get Digital Release April 16

The new animated movie Puffin Rock and the New Friends, from the Academy Award-nominated Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon and Northern Ireland’s Dog Ears, will be released through digital retailers April 16 by Shout! Studios. On that date, viewers can download the 90-minute movie on Google TV, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV to rent or purchase.

The home release comes as Cartoon Saloon celebrates its 25th anniversary as a studio. As part of its celebration, the studio is participating in film festivals around the country — and on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, will host the North American premiere of Puffin Rock and the New Friends at the New York International Children’s Film Festival. More festival screenings will follow prior to the digital release.

Based on the award-winning animated series, the movie celebrates Ireland’s natural environment and feature’s themes of belonging, courage and friendship. Favorite “Puffin Rock” characters Oona, Baba, May and Mossy are joined by a new cast of characters, as Isabelle, Phoenix and Marvin arrive on the island. When the last Little Egg of the season disappears under mysterious circumstances, Oona and her new friends race against time to bring the Little Egg home before a big storm hits Puffin Rock and puts the entire island in danger.

Cartoon Saloon, established in 1999 by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey, is a world-renowned animation studio with five Academy Award and two Golden Globe nominations and many award wins including BAFTA and Emmy. The studio is located in Kilkenny, Ireland.

Dog Ears is an Emmy-nominated children’s media company based in Derry, Northern Ireland, that creates content for TV, publishing and digital. Alongside the Puffin Rock movie, Dog Ear co-produced two seasons of the TV show and is in production on a major new animated series with Cartoon Saloon.

Shout! Studios Releasing ‘Quigley Down Under’ on 4K Disc March 12

Shout! Studios March 12 will release the Western Quigley Down Under on 4K Ultra HD disc as part of its Shout Select line.

The 1990 film stars Tom Selleck as American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley, who takes a job in Australia to hunt wild dogs. However, when he realizes that his mission is to eradicate Aborigines from the property of a wealthy cattle baron (Alan Rickman), Quigley refuses, and soon finds himself at war against his former employer.

The cast also includes Laura San Giacomo, Chris Haywood, Ron Haddrick, Tony Bonner, Jerome Ehlers, Roger Ward and Ben Mendelsohn.

The new combo pack includes the film on both 4K disc and regular Blu-ray with a new 4K scan of the original camera negative. The Blu-ray presentation includes English DTS-HD master audio 2.0 stereo.

Extras on the regular Blu-ray include “Finding Crazy Cora” an interview with Laura San Giacomo; “This One Shoots a Mite Further,” a closer look at the Sharps rifle with master armorer Mike Tristano; the featurette “The Rebirth of a Western”;TV spots; and the theatrical trailer.

Scream Factory Releasing 4K Disc of 2013’s ‘Carrie’ March 19

Shout! Studios’ horror imprint, Scream Factory, will release the 2013 remake of Carrie on 4K Ultra HD disc for the first time March 19.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, Carrie stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the title character, a high school student who endures merciless taunting from classmates and abuse at the hand of her religious fanatic mother (Julianne Moore). When a prom prank goes horribly wrong, an angered Carrie unleashes telekinetic powers upon those who wronged her.

The new collector’s edition includes the film on both 4K and regular Blu-ray disc with a new 4K scan from the original camera negative.

New bonus materials include “The Devil’s Hand: Designing Carrie” — an interview with production designer Carol Spier, and “They’re All Going to Laugh at You: Adapting Carrie” — an interview with author Joseph Maddrey.

Legacy extras include an audio commentary with director Kimberly Peirce, an alternate ending, deleted and alternate scenes, “Tina on Fire” stunt double dailies, “Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise,” the theatrical trailer, and the featurettes “Creating Carrie” and “The Power of Telekinesis.”

Scream Factory Releasing 4K of 2019’s ‘Child’s Play’ Remake March 19

Shout! Studios’ horror imprint Scream Factory will release a 4K collector’s edition of the 2019 Child’s Play remake March 19.

The Child’s Play: Collector’s Edition includes the film on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray disc, plus a slew of bonus materials. The film also sports a new 4K restoration from the original master in Dolby Vision.

In this re-imagining of the original 1988 Child’s Play from the producers of It, a mother (Aubrey Plaza) buys her lonely son (Gabriel Bateman) a seemingly innocent, AI-enhanced doll named Chucky (voiced by Mark Hamill) that unleashes a campaign of carnage when its safety restrictions are disabled.

Both the 4K and Blu-ray discs will include audio commentary with director Lars Klevberg. The Blu-ray will also include new interviews with Bateman, actor David James Lewis and production designer Dan Hermansen, plus legacy extras such as the featurettes “The Making of Child’s Play” and “Bringing Child’s Play‘s Chucky to Life,” a soundtrack trailer, Lee Hardcastle claymations, a photo gallery and the film’s theatrical trailer.

Shout! Studios, Toei Animation Team on ‘Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning’ Home Entertainment Release Plans

Shout! Studios and celebrated anime studio Toei Animation Inc. on Jan. 31 announced a new home entertainment distribution deal for Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning, the 2023 feature film based on the original TV sequel series from the globally popular Digimon anime franchise, which marks its 25th anniversary this year.

The multiyear partnership provides Shout! Studios with North American home entertainment distribution rights to the film for cross-platform releases in the United States and Canada, including all packaged-media and electronic sellthrough digital rights.

Shout! says it plans a strategic rollout of the film across multiple entertainment platforms in 2024. 

“We are delighted by this new opportunity with Toei Animation,” said Melissa Boag, Shout! Studios EVP of kids and family entertainment. “Over the years, we enjoyed tremendous success with the ‘Digimon Adventure tri.’ film series and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna. We look forward to presenting Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning to anime fans and families through home entertainment very soon.”
