Shout! Studios Gains Rights to Thriller ‘Dead of Night’

Shout! Studios, the multi-platform filmed entertainment and production arm of Shout! Factory, and VMI Worldwide announced a distribution collaboration to bring new suspense horror thriller The Dead of Night to a wide variety of entertainment platforms in the United States.

Written and directed by Robert Dean, The Dead of Night stars Matthew Lawrence and Lance Henriksen in the story of nomadic murderers dressed as wolves besieging a small rural town and terrorizing a ranch run by a brother and sister. The cast also includes Jake Etheridge, Colby Crain, Leah Bezozo and Kyle Overstreet.

The multiyear deal gives Shout! Studios extensive U.S. distribution rights to The Dead of Night, including digital, video-on-demand, broadcast, theatrical and home entertainment packaged media. Shout! plans a strategic launch of this movie across all major entertainment platforms in 2021.

Shout! Studios to Distribute Animated Family Feature ‘Dreambuilders’

Shout! Studios on Dec. 18 announced it has entered into an exclusive movie deal with Sola Media GmbH to distribute Dreambuilders, a new animated family feature film from the director of All Dogs Go To Heaven and Ferngully.

“Dreambuilders is an incredibly unique and engaging story, and we’re very excited to once again partner with Sola Media as we did on the wonderful family films Swift and Snowtime, to distribute it to a North American audience,” said Melissa Boag, Shout’s SVP of family entertainment.

Dreambuilders follows the story of a young girl named Minna who, in order to teach her stepsister a lesson, misuses her newfound ability to create and control other people’s dreams. This brings dire consequences, and Minna now must face the dreams she has created and enter the dream world one last time in to save her stepsister and her new family.  The film is directed by Kim Hagen Jensen, best known for All Dogs Go To Heaven and FernGully) and Tonni Zinck (The Neon Demon), and is produced by Nynne Selin Eidnes of First Lady Film.

Shout! Studios has secured all North American distribution rights to Dreambuilders, including theatrical, digital, video-on-demand, broadcast, and home entertainment for cross-platform releases. Shout! Studios plans a strategic launch of the film across all major entertainment platforms, including Blu-ray Disc and DVD.

Shout! Studios to Launch Urban Distribution Feature ‘Coppélia’ Across All Platforms in 2021

Shout! Studios has entered into an exclusive deal with Urban Distribution International to distribute the upcoming fine arts feature Coppélia in the United States and Canada.

Coppélia will be released across all platforms in 2021. Shout! Studios has secured all North American distribution rights including digital, video-on-demand, broadcast, theatrical, and home entertainment for cross-platform releases in the U.S. and Canada.

Coppélia combines animation and live action dance in a modern retelling of the love story between Swan and Franz, jeopardized by cosmetic surgeon Dr. Coppelius and his uncannily beautiful protégé, Coppélia.

The feature is produced by award-winning creators Submarine (Undone, Amazon Prime), and 3 Minutes West in co-production with MotionWorks and Lunanime. The feature is directed by Jeff Tudor, Steven de Beul and Ben Tesseur, and was choreographed by Ted Brandsen, the director of the Dutch National Ballet,  with original music from Maurizio Malagnini (Call the Midwife, Peter and Wendy).

World-renowned ballerina Michaela DePrince (Take Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina) leads an international cast that includes dancers Daniel Camargo (Brazil), San Francisco Ballet star Sasha Mukhamedov (U.K.), Vito Mazzeo (Italy), Irek Mukhamedov (Russia) and English prima ballerina Dame Darcey Bussell.

The deal was negotiated by Shout’s Jordan Fields, VP of acquisitions, and Louise Ronzet, head of international sales at UDI.

“As sales agents, we immediately fell in love with this smart, modernized version of the world-famous ballet,” Ronzet said. “Coppélia conveys messages of body positivity and self-acceptance, which are essential to challenge our appearance-obsessed culture and standardization of beauty through social media. We have no doubt this will appeal to all families and we are thrilled to have Shout! on board.”

Coppélia will be distributed by Square One in German-speaking territories and Periscoop Film in Benelux. Both are planning a release in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Action Thriller ‘Dead Reckoning’ Heads Home Nov. 13

Shout! Studios has announced the Nov. 13 release date for Dead Reckoning, a suspense action thriller directed by legendary cinematographer and filmmaker Andrzej Bartkowiak (Prizzi’s Honor, The Verdict, Terms of Endearment, Doom, Speed).

The film will be available for home viewing on VOD and digital platforms such as AppleTV, Amazon, Vudu, FandangoNow, Hoopla, Sony, Microsoft, GooglePlay, Comcast, Cox, Charter, Verizon, DirecTV and Dish.

Dead Reckoning follows the story of Tillie Gardner, a young college student on summer break who is coping with the loss of her parents in a tragic private plane crash a few weeks earlier. A summer romance with a local cab driver named Niko is helping her cope, but what she doesn’t realize is that he is the brother of the terrorist who actually sabotaged the plane, and who is involved with a plot to bomb the annual Fourth of July beach celebration on Nantucket Island. Only time will tell if she can gather herself and her wits together and discover his dark secret in time to prevent the terrible massacre.

Shout! Studios Strikes First-Look Deal With Quincy Newell’s TwentyOne14 Media

Shout! Studios, the multi-platform filmed entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory, on Oct. 14 announced a first-look deal with entertainment executive Quincy Newell and his content production company, TwentyOne14 Media.

The deal calls for Newell and TwentyOne14 Media to develop and produce multicultural focused entertainment with Shout! Studios. The wide-ranging deal covers all media, including feature films, series, and short-form content.

“We have known Quincy for many years. He holds an extensive background and success in marketing, development and production. His creative vision helped propel many films to industry and press acclaim,” Shout’s founders and CEOs, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos, said in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to welcome Quincy. We know that he and TwentyOne14 Media will be one of our prime partners to bolster our slate of original productions.”

Newell said,“Shout! is the perfect partner to align with on this mission. It’s refreshing to have a partner that understands, diversity is good business.”

Newell launched TwentyOne14 Media after spending the past 30 years working in business, marketing and distribution at UrbanWorks Entertainment, Vivendi Entertainment, and Lionsgate.

He also co-founded Codeblack Entertainment, where he produced the 2009 Sundance Film Festival official selection Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy, Kevin Hart’s independent hit Laugh at my Pain, Showtime Network’s “Shaq All Star Comedy Jam” franchise, and various stand-up comedy specials. Newell also received an NAACP Image Award nomination for his role as producer on T.D. Jakes’ Woman Thou Art Loosed: on the 7th Day.

Following the company’s acquisition by Lionsgate, Newell went on to serve as EVP and GM of the Lionsgate label Codeblack Films.

Shout! Studios Sets Home Release Date for Linda Ronstadt Documentary

Shout! Studios and PCH Films have announced the Oct. 20 home release of Linda and the Mockingbirds, a documentary capturing Linda Ronstadt’s 2019 journey to Mexico with the young Mexican-American song and dance troupe Los Cenzontles.

The documentary will be released digitally and is available for pre-order now.

From award-winning director and producer James Keach (Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me), who also produced the 2019 Linda Ronstadt documentary The Sound of My Voice, Linda and the Mockingbirds is the result of Ronstadt introducing Keach to the Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy.

The documentary chronicles a road trip with Ronstadt, musician Jackson Browne, and a tour bus full of young singers, dancers and instrumentalists to the small town of Banámichi in the Mexican state of Sonora, where Ronstadt’s grandfather grew up. There, they meet up with their Mexican counterparts, the folkloric dance troupe Grupo de Danza Xunutzi, and put on soulful performances showcasing Mexican culture.

A well-known musical icon, Ronstadt is the recipient of multiple Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards, as well as an ALMA Award and an Emmy. In her recording career she released three hit Spanish-language albums.

Shout! Sets Home Date for Epic Actioner ‘The Rising Hawk’

Independent film distributor Shout! Studios has set an Oct. 2 home release date for the epic action movie The Rising Hawk.

The film, directed by John Wynn, will be available on VOD platforms and through digital retailers.

The Rising Hawk boasts an international cast that includes Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Tommy Flanagan (“Sons of Anarchy”), Poppy Drayton (“The Shannara Chronicles”), Alex MacNicoll (“The Society,” which has just been canceled by Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Alison Doody (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Tsegmid Tserenbold (“Marco Polo”), Rocky Myers (“Animal Kingdom”), and Oliver Trevena (“The Reckoning” miniseries).

The film is a collaboration between American and Ukrainian filmmakers. It was nominated for seven 2020 Ukrainian Academy Film Awards, winning three. An international team of filmmakers and actors were brought together from all over the world, including Ukraine, United States, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Germany, to film the movie.

The Rising Hawk takes place in a 13th Century Mongolian Empire following Zakhar Berkut (Robert Patrick) and his wife Rada (Alison Doody) as they lead a group of highlanders in the Carpathian Mountains. Unfortunately, their tranquil existence is soon threatened by Burunda Khan (Tsegmid Tserenbold), a powerful Mongolian general who leads his massive armies west in search of new lands to conquer.

 

Air Jordan Doc Heading Home Aug. 25 from Shout! Studios

Shout! Studios has set an Aug. 25 home release date for One Man and His Shoes, a documentary directed Yemi Bamiro and produced by Will Thorne hat focuses on the social, cultural, and racial significance of Nike’s Air Jordan.

The documentary will be available on digital platforms for watch-at-home, including Apple TV, Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, FandangoNow and Hoopla.

One Man and His Shoes chronicles the rise of Air Jordan — named after basketball legend Michael Jordan — and shows how groundbreaking marketing strategies created a multi-billion-dollar business. The documentary, according to a press release, “delves into the darker side of success, a parable of America’s dark love affair with consumer capitalism and celebrity culture. Using a mix of archival footage and graphic animation, the feature documentary returns viewers to an era that feels distant, even nostalgic, yet was only a few decades ago.”

The documentary features interviews with Michael Jordan’s close friends and associates, including David Falk (former agent), David J. Stern (NBA Commissioner, 1984-2014) Sonny Vaccaro (the man who scouted him), Peter Moore (original designer), his biographer Roland Lazenby, the legendary sports journalist Jamele Hill, and sports writer Scoop Jackson.

Shout! Studios Sets Watch-at-Home Date for ‘Stuntwomen’ Doc

Shout! Studios has announced a Sept. 22 watch-at-home date for Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, a new documentary directed by April Wright and narrated by Michelle Rodriguez.

The film will debut on digital platforms such as AppleTV, Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, Hoopla, Fandango Now, Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox and Charter.

Based on the best-selling book by Mollie Gregory, Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story introduces viewers to the female stunt performers who drive the action behind some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies, from the first black-and-white “flickers” to today’s high-tech mega epics.

Stuntwomen over the years have risked their lives in front of the camera, while fighting for equal rights with male stunt performers, battling sexism and harassment, and sometimes sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Shout! Studios Gets Home Entertainment Rights to Ledafilms’ ‘Mia and the White Lion’

Shout! Studios, the multi-platform filmed entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory, has signed a distribution agreement with Ledafilms Entertainment Group to bring the family film Mia and the White Lion to the home entertainment marketplace in the United States.

The film depicts the friendship between a young girl and a white lion, and an adventure in the South African savanna to find her friend a new home. Brought to life by French director Gilles De Maistre, the film stars Daniah De Villiers, Mélanie Laurent, Langley Kirkwood and Ryan Mac Lennan.

Shout! Studios’ distribution rights include transactional video on demand and physical home video. The film was released in theaters April 12 and Shout plans a strategic launch across multiple entertainment platforms this summer.

“There is a winsome combination of heart, soul, and animal adventure, and we believe this film will strongly resonate with the family audience,” said Melissa Boag, Shout SVP of kids and family entertainment.

Shout! Factory will release the film on Blu-ray, DVD and digitally July 2.
