Shout! Studios Sets June 10 Theatrical, VOD Date for ‘I’m Charlie Walker’

Shout Studios on June 1 announced the simultaneous theatrical and VOD opening of I’m Charlie Walker on June 10.

The film, written and directed by Patrick Gilles, tells the true story of one man’s  determination to overcome racial prejudices in 1970s San Francisco. The film stars Mike Colter as trucking and construction entrepreneur Charlie Walker.

In 1971, two oil tankers violently collided off the San Francisco coast, spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into the ocean and creating an environmental disaster. Walker was able to secure one of the most lucrative contracts to clean the coastline that threatened much of the San Francisco Bay, even though he only had three trucks. The film recounts the racial discrimination Walker endured as he tried to save the coastline while fighting institutional racism from the very company that hired him in the first place.

Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco who at the time represented the Bay Area in the California state Assembly, said of the film,  “I was a witness to Charlie Walker’s amazing story of grit and determination in the face of adversity as it unfolded in San Francisco back in 1971. To finally see his triumphant life story hit the big screen with a major motion picture brings a huge smile to my face.”

Aside from Colter, the cast also includes Dylan Baker, Safiya Fredericks, Mark Leslie Ford, Steven Wiig, Emma Caulfield Ford, Monica Barbaro, Travis Johns, Greg Cipes and Carl Lumbly.

Shout! Studios Picks Up SXSW Favorite ‘Linoleum’

Shout! Studios, the multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory, has acquired North American rights to the sci-fi comedy-drama Linoleum from Sub_Sequential Picture.

The announcement comes on the heels of the film’s successful world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and its Sloan Science on Screen Award win at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

Written and directed by Colin West, the film stars Jim Gaffigan and Rhea Seehorn. The cast also includes Katelyn Nacon, Gabriel Rush, Amy Hargreaves , Roger Hendricks Simon, Elizabeth Henry and West Duchovny.

Linoleum is a personal and inventive story that weaves life-altering generational moments into a cosmic tapestry of human experiences. Cameron Edwin (Gaffigan), the host of a failing children’s science TV show called “Above & Beyond,” has always had aspirations of being an astronaut. After a mysterious space-race era satellite coincidentally falls from space and lands in his backyard, his midlife crisis manifests in a plan to rebuild the machine into his dream rocket. As his relationship with his wife (Seehorn) and daughter (Nacon) start to strain, surreal events begin unfolding around him — a doppelgänger moving into the house next door, a car falling from the sky, and an unusual teenage boy forging a friendship with him. He slowly starts to piece these events together to ultimately reveal that there’s more to his life story than he once thought.

Shout! Sets May 3 Release Date for China’s ‘Dinosaur World’

Shout! Studios and Shout! Factory have announced the May 3 release of Dinosaur World, a 2020 Chinese film from director Ryan Bellgardt.

The film will be available on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and on digital platforms Redbox on Demand, Vudu, iTunes/AppleTV, Google Play, and Amazon’s Prime Video. The Blu-ray and DVD versions are available for preorder now at ShoutFactory.com.

Dinosaur World chronicles the story of a deadly game with a life-changing prize, when a group of contestants come together to take part in a competition held in a virtual reality realm ruled by dinosaurs. The players quickly find that their initial goals of shifting alliances and jockeying for victory become secondary to the ultimate goal: survival.

According to the Oklahoman, Bellgardt, an Oklahoma native, “lensed his sixth feature film in multiple locations around Oklahoma in summer 2019 (well before the COVID-19 pandemic) using the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program. Before the Edmond native even made the movie, it had already secured a wide release in China, including a theatrical release, TV runs and video on-demand across China’s top three online streaming service providers.”

Shout! Studios Sets Jan. 11 Digital-Only Release for ‘Diary of the Grizzly Man’ Documentary

Shout! Studios has set a Jan. 11 digital-only release date for “Diary of the Grizzly Man,” a miniseries about Timothy Treadwell, who spent 13 years in the Alaskan wilderness, studying the park’s grizzly bears, before one of those bears killed him.

The three-hour miniseries is crafted from Treadwell’s vast film archive and will be available for rent or purchase on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and other digital platforms.

Treadwell arrived in Alaska’s Katmai National Park in 1990 and stayed there until October 2003, when one of the bears he was studying killed him.  Treadwell left behind photographic and written diaries of his life with the bears and foxes.

Directed by Timothy Treadwell, “Diary of the Grizzly Man” was produced by Erik Nelson and Jewel Palovak, the producers of Werner Herzog’s acclaimed documentary Grizzly Man. The new miniseries contains never-before-seen footage and still photographs of Treadwell’s interactions with very wild nature — dangerous interactions that would ultimately lead to the death of Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Hugarnard. Along with this footage, Treadwell’s personal diaries are read by his close friend, actor Warren Queeny. The original score for this series is written and performed by the renowned guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson.

In “Episode One: Bear Necessities,” Treadwell introduces viewers to his work observing, and filming, upwards of 30 grizzly bears that pass by his camp on any given day, observations that bring him dangerously close to these deadly predators.

In “Episode Two: Friends and Neighbors,” Treadwell introduces viewers to his longtime companion Timmy the Fox as they weather two earthquakes, a wolf attack, the discovery of a past poaching operation, an arctic rainstorm and ongoing harassment by Federal park rangers.

And in “Episode Three: The Fall,” Treadwell takes viewers through “The Grizzly Maze,” an extremely dense jungle habitat where one must get around using only grizzly-worn paths leading to several different creeks, feeding areas and bear hangouts. The events leading to Treadwell’s shocking death hypnotically unfold, culminating with the viewers hearing his final diary entry, written just one day before his death.
