Samsung Ups Local TV News Streaming Access

Samsung is ramping up efforts to stream local TV news across its ad-supported branded “TV Plus” platform, which reaches 23 countries and more than 106 million devices globally.

In a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the South Korean consumer electronics giant, respondents confirmed that TV viewing across the U.S. remains overwhelmingly strong, with local news leading the pack with 62%, followed by national/political (55%) and international news programming (24%).

The survey found that consumers primarily rely on national TV news for political/global affairs (45%) and major crime stories/trends (37%). However, even in our app-connected lives, almost eight in 10 (77%) respondents said that local TV weather remains the most trusted source of updates.

The survey also found that politics, crime, and the weather are not the only things viewers tune into TV news for, with popular on-air personalities remaining a big draw for audiences across the United States. In fact, local news anchors (43%) and local weather reporters (37%) are the most enjoyed on-air personalities across all categories. National news hosts (35%) rounded out the top three TV news personalities, followed by political news hosts (24%).

Rotten Tomatoes OTT Channel Launching on Samsung TV Plus

Rotten Tomatoes is launching its over-the-top (OTT) channel on Samsung TV Plus, Samsung’s free ad-supported video service.

The Rotten Tomatoes Channel features 24/7 linear programming, more than a dozen originally produced shows and nearly 200 hours of premium long and short-form video content on entertainment.

Debuting on the channel are four new shows: “Behind the Movie,” “Trailer Trivia,” “Year in Review” and “Binge Battle.” “Behind the Movie” delivers scene breakdowns, deep-dive interviews and behind-the-scenes tales from the biggest names in Hollywood. “Trailer Trivia” revisits the trailers that got fans pumped for some of the biggest movies of all time and dishes on trivia and Easter Eggs from those films. “Year in Review” relives Hollywood’s biggest hits, misses and forgotten gems. Each episode focuses on a single year of movies and TV, showcased through trailers, clips, interviews and more. In “Binge Battle,” comedian and host Mark Ellis pits two teams against each other to debate some of the biggest questions surrounding the most bingeable TV series and movie franchises ever made. Debating topics such as “Best Character,” “Best Episode” and “Most Surprising Twist,” contestants are judged by the viewers before Mark crowns a “Binge Battle” champ.

Samsung Expands TV Plus AVOD Platform to Web

Samsung has quietly rolled out its ad-supported “TV Plus” streaming video platform app for anyone to access on the internet. The app, which streams third-party content such as ABC News Live, PBS Kids, ION Plus and Vice, similarly to Redbox Live TV, The Roku Channel, Pluto TV and Tubi, has been available since 2016 for mobile devices and Samsung TV owners.

Samsung also made the app available to cast on Google Chromecast devices, according to Protocol, which first reported the move.

Since launching the app, Samsung reportedly has installed the platform in 50 million of its connected televisions, in addition to access on Galaxy mobile devices. It is also available in 23 countries.

“We stream billions of minutes every month,” Sang Kim, SVP of Samsung Electronics, told the publication.

Indeed, AVOD and free ad-supported streaming television, or FAST, has grown in popularity among CE manufacturers and media companies unwilling to directly take on SVOD, including heavyweights Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu.

More importantly, AVOD is generating ad-revenue, hundreds of millions of dollars worth. In its most-recent fiscal filing, Roku reported it generated $466 million in Q1 platform-related ad revenue, up 101% from the previous-year period.

Both ViacomCBS and Fox Entertainment contend their respective AVOD platforms (Pluto TV and Tubi) can generate about $1 billion in annual advertising revenue by next year.

Prior to joining Crown Media, Grover served as a content marketing manager at Hulu, developing strategies for original and documentary programming. Previously, he held marketing roles at Discovery Communications and Turner Broadcasting.
