Rotten Tomatoes OTT Channel Launching on Samsung TV Plus

Rotten Tomatoes is launching its over-the-top (OTT) channel on Samsung TV Plus, Samsung’s free ad-supported video service.

The Rotten Tomatoes Channel features 24/7 linear programming, more than a dozen originally produced shows and nearly 200 hours of premium long and short-form video content on entertainment.

Debuting on the channel are four new shows: “Behind the Movie,” “Trailer Trivia,” “Year in Review” and “Binge Battle.” “Behind the Movie” delivers scene breakdowns, deep-dive interviews and behind-the-scenes tales from the biggest names in Hollywood. “Trailer Trivia” revisits the trailers that got fans pumped for some of the biggest movies of all time and dishes on trivia and Easter Eggs from those films. “Year in Review” relives Hollywood’s biggest hits, misses and forgotten gems. Each episode focuses on a single year of movies and TV, showcased through trailers, clips, interviews and more. In “Binge Battle,” comedian and host Mark Ellis pits two teams against each other to debate some of the biggest questions surrounding the most bingeable TV series and movie franchises ever made. Debating topics such as “Best Character,” “Best Episode” and “Most Surprising Twist,” contestants are judged by the viewers before Mark crowns a “Binge Battle” champ.

“The expansion of The Rotten Tomatoes Channel to Samsung devices is an important step to reaching as many entertainment fans as possible and connecting them to movies, TV and streaming they’ll love,” Sandro Corsaro, Rotten Tomatoes SVP and chief creative officer, said in a statement. “We’re excited to be working with Samsung and serving their loyal customers with high-quality entertainment recommendations and tools that only Rotten Tomatoes can deliver.”

The launch of The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Samsung TV Plus comes on the heels of its debut earlier this year on The Roku Channel, Peacock, Xumo TV and other vMPDs (virtual multichannel programming distributors). Most recently, clips from The Rotten Tomatoes Channel started airing on Reach TV, a live streaming network available on more than 2,500 screens in airport bars, restaurants, lounges, departure gates and concourses across the United States and Canada.

Samsung Expands TV Plus AVOD Platform to Web

Samsung has quietly rolled out its ad-supported “TV Plus” streaming video platform app for anyone to access on the internet. The app, which streams third-party content such as ABC News Live, PBS Kids, ION Plus and Vice, similarly to Redbox Live TV, The Roku Channel, Pluto TV and Tubi, has been available since 2016 for mobile devices and Samsung TV owners.

Samsung also made the app available to cast on Google Chromecast devices, according to Protocol, which first reported the move.

Since launching the app, Samsung reportedly has installed the platform in 50 million of its connected televisions, in addition to access on Galaxy mobile devices. It is also available in 23 countries.

“We stream billions of minutes every month,” Sang Kim, SVP of Samsung Electronics, told the publication.

Indeed, AVOD and free ad-supported streaming television, or FAST, has grown in popularity among CE manufacturers and media companies unwilling to directly take on SVOD, including heavyweights Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu.

More importantly, AVOD is generating ad-revenue, hundreds of millions of dollars worth. In its most-recent fiscal filing, Roku reported it generated $466 million in Q1 platform-related ad revenue, up 101% from the previous-year period.

Both ViacomCBS and Fox Entertainment contend their respective AVOD platforms (Pluto TV and Tubi) can generate about $1 billion in annual advertising revenue by next year.

Samsung TV Plus Gets Hallmark Movies & More

Samsung TV Plus, the free ad-supported streaming television platform, has inked a carriage agreement with the Hallmark Movies & More. The channel featuring romance and relationship-themed content is available for free to connected Samsung television owners.

Hallmark Movies & More offers movies, series and specials from Hallmark’s expansive library. In June, the service will feature 14 movies, including For Better or For Worse; How to Train Your Husband; Meddling Mom; The Memory Book; and Kiss at Pine Lake, among others.

The network also features its own annual holiday programming franchise, “Miracles of Christmas.”

The deal follows the promotion of Michael Grover to VP of brand marketing at Hallmark subsidiary Crown Media. Grover is charged with developing and executing consumer marketing initiatives, including paid advertising for the network’s linear channels and SVOD service, promotional partnerships, experiential activations, and synergy initiatives.

Prior to joining Crown Media, Grover served as a content marketing manager at Hulu, developing strategies for original and documentary programming. Previously, he held marketing roles at Discovery Communications and Turner Broadcasting.

Samsung TV Plus features more than 160 channels covering news, sports and entertainment. It’s available on 2016-21 Samsung Smart TVs and select mobile devices.
