Jan. 24 New DVD and Blu-ray Releases Include ‘Violent Night,’ ‘Rock Dog 3’

Jan. 24 sees the DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of titles such as Violent Night and Rock Dog 3: Battle the Beat.

The Christmas-themed action comedy Violent Night will available on Blu-ray and DVD Jan. 24 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. In the film, when a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound taking everyone inside hostage, they are not prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus. David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) stars as St. Nick, delivering some serious season’s beatings to save the family and the spirit of Christmas. Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, “Dead Snow” franchise), the film also stars John Leguizamo (John Wick), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Cam Gigandet (Without Remorse), Alex Hassell (Cowboy Bebop), Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War) and Beverly D’Angelo (“National Lampoon’s Vacation” franchise).

The animated musical comedy Rock Dog 3: Battle the Beat will be released on Blu-ray (plus digital) and DVD Jan. 24 from Lionsgate. Viewers join the famous Tibetan mastiff for his newest adventure as he continues on his journey as a musician. After touring the world, Bodi takes some time off and returns to his village. When he learns that the girl group K-9 doesn’t know who rock legend Angus Scattergood is, he is compelled to join the musical competition show “Battle the Beat” to inspire a new generation of rock stars. But after joining the show, Bodi quickly realizes he has bitten off more than he can chew when he becomes an overnight TV personality sensation. The voice cast includes Eddie Izzard.

Biography: WWE Legends Vol. 3 will be released on DVD Jan. 24 from Lionsgate. The release features profiles of eight fan favorites — from longtime legends such as The Undertaker, Goldberg and Lex Luger to more-contemporary superstars The Bella Twins and Rey Mysterio — as well as a finale episode chronicling the takeover of Madison Square Garden for WrestleMania. Each program showcases the stories behind some of the most memorable WWE superstars. Archival footage and compelling interviews reveal the evolution and pop culture impact of WWE giants The Undertaker, Goldberg, The Bella Twins, Lex Luger, Edge, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio and D-Generation X.

Inu-oh, a new anime film from acclaimed director Masaaki Yuasa (Ride Your Wave, Mind Game, Night is Short), will be available Jan. 24 on Blu-ray Disc and DVD from GKIDS and Shout! Factory. Set in 14th-century Japan, the film follows a young boy born into an esteemed family named Inu-oh who is afflicted with an ancient curse that has left him on the margins of society. When he meets the blind musician Tomona, a young biwa priest haunted by his past, Inu-oh discovers a captivating ability to dance. The pair become inseparable as crowds flock to their electric and larger than life concerts. When those in power threaten to break up the band, the friends must dance and sing to uncover the truth behind their creative gifts.

Kino Lorber will release the documentary Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Jan. 24. Director Nina Menkes’ examines the sexual politics of cinematic shot design using clips from hundreds of famous movies — from Metropolis to Vertigo to Phantom Thread — and interviews from industry professionals including Julie Dash, Penelope Spheeris, Charlyne Yi, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Eliza Hittman, Maria Giese and Rosanna Arquette.

The Dentist Collection, which includes both The Dentist (1996) and its sequel The Dentist 2 (1998), will be released for the first time on Blu-ray (plus digital) Jan. 24 from Lionsgate in the Vestron Video collection. Featuring two-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Corbin Bernsen (1988 and 1987, TV’s “L.A. Law,” Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Major League, Major League II), the horror collection follows dentist Dr. Alan Feinstone (Bernsen) who has everything including a beautiful wife and a successful career in dentistry. That is, until he discovers his wife cheating on him. After going insane, he enacts cruel dental torture on his patients. In The Dentist, Beverly Hills dentist Dr. Feinstone seems to have the perfect, ordered life — until the discovery of his wife’s affair with the pool boy sends him off the deep end, unlocking the killer inside. The Dentist 2 finds the evil doctor in a maximum-security mental hospital — but not for long, as he escapes to a small town and turns his attentions to a new love interest and new victims.

MGM’s cult-classic 1982 teen comedy The Last American Virgin will be released on Blu-ray Jan. 24 as part of the MVD Rewind Collection. The film follows a close-knit group of high school friends, Gary (Lawrence Monoson, Mask), the shy guy; his friend Rick (Steve Antin, The Goonies), the ladies man; and David (Joe Rubbo, Hot Chili), the comic foil; and their exploits in pursuit of love — or at the very least — their first time. The film also stars Diane Franklin (Better Off Dead), Louisa Moritz (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Kimmy Robertson (“Twin Peaks”) and features a classic ’80s soundtrack that includes songs from Devo, U2, Oingo Boingo, The Commodores, The Waitresses, The Cars, The Plimsouls and REO Speedwagon.

Featuring performances from rappers Nas and DMX, Belly (1998) arrives for the first time in 4K Ultra High-Definition Jan. 24 from Lionsgate. The title will also be available as a Best Buy exclusive 4K Ultra HD (plus Blu-ray plus digital) Steelbook. Written and directed by Hype Williams — winner of the Award for Achievement in Music Videos at the 30th annual EnergaCamerimage Cinematography Festival (2022) and MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (2003) — Belly is an urban crime-thriller. In the film, as gang leader Tommy (Earl “DMX” Simmons) looks to expand his turf by dealing a new form of heroin, his friend Sincere (Nasir “Nas” Jones) dreams of escaping the gangster life with his girlfriend and baby daughter. After a drug house operated by Tommy is raided, he and Sincere — now pursued by both the police and rival gangs — each find themselves on a course that will either lead to redemption or ruin.

The 2005 drama London, starring Jessica Biel and Chris Evans, will be released on Blu-ray Disc Jan. 24 from Mill Creek Entertainment. In this film, now that his passionate but stormy relationship with London has ended, Syd has become a total wreck. Numbing himself senseless with drugs and alcohol, Syd decides to crash London’s going away party, hoping to stop his ex-love from leaving town. In addition to Evans and Biel, the film stars Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter, Furious 7), Joy Bryant (Honey, Parenthood, Ballers); and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, The Great Gatsby, “Arrested Development”).

Shout! Factory Jan. 24 releases The Jackie Chan Collection Vol. 1 (1976-1982), a collection of seven classic films that showcase the unique mixture of martial arts, action, and comedy that made Jackie Chan a hit. The set, available on Blu-ray Disc only, features Shaolin Wooden Men, where an orphan traumatized by the death of his father meets a prisoner at the Shaolin Monastery who teaches him a secret and deadly form of Kung Fu; To Kill With Intrigue, in which a young master sends his girlfriend away from the family castle to flee from a gang of vengeful women; Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin, about a young man who must fight off numerous clans to learn the true reason for the disappearance of the Shaolin Masters; Dragon Fist, about a student who embarks on a sacred journey to avenge his master who was murdered; Battle Creek Brawl, in which a Chicago man is forced to enter a no-holds-barred combat tournament in Texas; and Dragon Lord, about a student named Dragon who encounters a group of bandits trying to steal antiques.
