Warner Bros.’ Record Box Office Drives WarnerMedia’s Banner 2018

Spurred by Warner Bros.’ record $5.5 billion global box office, WarnerMedia generated more than $9.2 billion in revenue in 2018 — up nearly 7% from revenue of $8.6 billion when the company operated as Time Warner prior to the closing of AT&T’s $85 billion acquisition.

The media company comprising Warner Bros., HBO, Turner and Otter Media, posted Q4 operating income of $2.7 billion; and $5.69 billion for the year.

The company said it generated $564 million in fourth-quarter (ended Dec. 31, 2018) revenue from the sales of video games and home entertainment, which was down nearly 15% from revenue of $682 million in the previous-year period. For the year, revenue dropped nearly 45% to $1.08 billion from $1.93 billion in 2017.

Sales of packaged media and digital from movies and TV shows topped $1.56 billion and $416 million, respectively, in the previous-year quarter under Time Warner. WarnerMedia does not breakout home video revenue.

In 2018, Warner Bros. theatrical revenue was driven led by Ready Player One and the fourth-quarter releases Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Aquaman, the latter grossing nearly $1.1 billion at the global box office to date.

Warner Q4 revenue topped $4.5 billion and included revenue of $2.1 billion from theatrical product, $1.8 billion from television product and $564 million from video games and home entertainment. Operating expenses totaled $3.7 billion, and the operating income margin was 18.1%.

HBO revenue in the quarter reached $1.7 billion and included $1.4 billion of subscription and $259 million of content and other revenue. Operating expenses totaled $1.1 billion and the operating income margin was 37.2%.

Turner Q4 revenue reached $3.2 billion, compared to $107 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. Revenue during the quarter included $1.8 billion of subscription revenue, $1.1 billion of advertising and $219 million of content and other revenues. Operating expenses totaled $1.9 billion, compared to $59 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. Turner’s operating income margin was 40.2% compared to 44.9% in the year-ago quarter.

The increases were predominantly due to the June 2018 acquisition of Time Warner.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Debuts at No. 3 on Redbox Kiosk Chart

Redbox and The Walt Disney Co. may be feuding, but that hasn’t stopped fans of Avengers: Infinity War from renting the superhero action blockbuster at The Box.

The year’s No. 2 movie, with a domestic box office gross of more than $678 million, debuted at No. 3 on Redbox’s weekly kiosk chart for the week ended Aug. 20.

The kiosk chart tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals.

Films with high purchase appeal, like Avengers, typically don’t see much rental demand, which explains why Melissa McCarthy comedy Life of the Party, from Warner Bros., remains No. 1 on the kiosk chart for the second consecutive week – even though its box office take was less than $53 million.

Life of the Party also repeated at No. 1 on the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Disney and Redbox are embroiled in litigation over Redbox’s sale of digital copy codes; the studio is the only one that won’t sell DVDs or Blu-ray Discs directly to Redbox, forcing the company to buy copies at retail.

Avengers: Infinity War is not available on the Redbox On Demand site.

Also repeating, at No. 2, is Universal Pictures’ Breaking In. The revenge thriller, about a mother (Gabrielle Union) who must protect her children after the mansion of her recently deceased father is invaded by a quartet of burglars, earned $46.5 million in U.S. theaters.

Both films were released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Aug. 7 and digital two weeks earlier (on July 24).

Lionsgate’s Overboard remake finished the week at No. 4 on the Redbox disc rental chart, down from No. 3 the prior week, while the No. 5 spot on the kiosk chart went to Warner’s Rampage, down from No. 4 the previous week.

On the Redbox digital chart, Overboard, Rampage and Ready Player One made encore appearances at Nos. 3, 4 and 5.

Paramount’s Downsizing, released back in March, returned to the Redbox On Demand chart at No. 9.

‘Death of Superman’ Edges ‘Ready Player One’ to Top Disc Sales Charts

It’s rare for a direct-to-video movie to top the weekly home video sales charts, but Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s The Death of Superman pulled it off the week ended Aug. 11.

The debut of the animated superhero actioner pushed Warner’s Ready Player One, which had been the top title the previous two weeks, to No. 2 on both the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

It was a close result, as Ready Player One ended the week selling 99.9% as many total units as Death of Superman, an adaptation of the classic comic book storyline from the 1990s. The gap was a bit bigger on the Blu-ray chart, where Ready Player One sold 82% as many high-def copies.

Blu-ray Disc accounted for 78% of Death of Superman unit sales.

Warner actually had the top three titles on both charts, with the comedy Life of the Party, starring Melissa McCarthy, debuting at No. 3 after a domestic box office haul of $52.9 million.

The Universal Pictures thriller Breaking In, which stars Gabrielle Union as a mother protecting her family from burglars, debuted at No. 4 overall and No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart. The film earned $46.5 million in U.S. theaters.

No. 5 overall and No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart was Warner’s Rampage.

On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended Aug. 12, Life of the Party debuted at No. 1, followed by Breaking In at No. 2.

Liongate’s Overboard remake dropped to No. 3 after leading all rentals the previous week.

Rounding out the top five rentals were Rampage at No. 4 and Ready Player One at No. 5.

‘Life of the Party,’ ‘Breaking In’ Take Two Top Spots on Redbox Disc, Digital Charts

The newly released Melissa McCarthy comedy Life of the Party, from Warner Bros., topped both Redbox charts the week ended Aug. 13.

The film, with a domestic box office haul of just under $53 million, debuted at No. 1 on both Redbox’s kiosk rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals, and the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Life of the Party is the third film directed by Ben Falcone and written by Falcone and McCarthy (the two earlier films were 2014’s Tammy and 2016’s The Boss). The film stars McCarthy as a newly divorced mother who returns to college to finish her degree, and winds up bonding with her daughter’s friends.

Another new release, Universal Pictures’ Breaking In, debuted at No. 2, also on both charts.

Lionsgate’s Overboard remake, which debuted at No. 1 the prior week, slipped to No. 3, also on both charts.  .

Rampage, the science-fiction monster movie based on the video game series of the same name, slipped to No. 4 on both charts, after two weeks at No. 2.

Rounding out the top five on both charts was Ready Player One, the latest sci-fi film from Steven Spielberg, down from No. 3 the prior week.

‘Ready Player One’ Still No. 1 in the Disc Sales Game

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Ready Player One remained at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended Aug. 4.

The Steven Spielberg-directed adventure, based on the book about a contest that will give the winner control of a futuristic virtual reality empire, had debuted at No. 1 on both charts the week before.

Holding onto No. 2 on both charts for a second consecutive week was Warner’s Rampage.

The top newcomer on both charts came in at No. 3 — Lionsgate’s Overboard remake, with Anna Faris playing a down-on-her-luck mother who claims to be married to a rich guy, played by Eugenio Derbez, who mistreats her then gets amnesia after falling off his yacht (in the 1987 original, Goldie Hawn is the wealthy amnesiac and Kurt Russell the mistreated former employee who takes advantage of the situation).

Rounding out the top five on the overall chart were two 20th Century Fox releases — Super Troopers 2 at No. 4 and The Greatest Showman at No. 5.

On the Blu-ray chart, Paramount’s A Quiet Place was No. 4 and Super Troopers 2 was No. 5.

Blu-ray Disc accounted for just 40% of total unit sales of Overboard.

On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended Aug. 5, Overboard took the top spot, while Rampage stayed at No. 2.

The previous week’s top rental, Ready Player One, dropped to No. 3, followed by Super Troopers 2 at No. 4 and Universal Pictures’ I Feel Pretty at No. 5.

‘Overboard’ Remake Tops Redbox Kiosk, On Demand Charts

Lionsgate’s Overboard, a remake of the 1987 MGM romantic comedy, debuted at No. 1 on both Redbox charts the week ended Aug. 6.

The film, which earned just over $50 million in U.S. theaters, took over the top spot on both Redbox’s kiosk rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals, and the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Overboard stars Eugenio Derbez, Anna Faris, Eva Longoria, John Hannah, and Swoosie Kurtz. The plot is the same as the original, but the roles are reversed: in the 2018 remake, a struggling single mom convinces a rich player with amnesia that they are married.

Rampage, the science-fiction monster movie based on the video game series of the same name, held onto the No. 2 spot on both charts. The Warner Bros. release stars Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Ready Player One, the latest sci-fi film from Steven Spielberg, took the No. 3 spot on both Redbox charts after bowing at No. 1 the prior week.

Still holding strong is Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty, from Universal Pictures, which remains at No. 4 on both the kiosk disc rental chart and the transactional video chart.

Rounding out the top five on the kiosk chart was 20th Century Fox’s Super Troopers 2, which had debuted the prior week at No. 3.

On the Redbox On Demand digital chart, the No. 5 spot went to Universal Pictures’ Blockers.

On the kiosk chart, two other new releases bowed in the top 10. Universal Pictures’ Tully, starring Charlize Theron as a mother of three who strikes up a friendship with her nanny (Mackenzie Davis), debuted at No. 9. Lionsgate’s Dark Crimes, with Jim Carrey as a detective who detects similarities between a cold case murder and a popular novel, debuted at No. 10.

Also new on the digital chart is The Miracle Season, from 20h Century Fox, debuting at No. 10. The movie I based on the true story of the Iowa City West High School volleyball team after the sudden death of the team’s leader.
