Prime Video Orders Robin Wright Series ‘The Girlfriend’

May 2 ahead of its inaugural Upfronts presentation on May 14, Prime Video announced that it has ordered the series “The Girlfriend,” with Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (“House of Cards”) currently set to star and direct.

“The Girlfriend” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Olivia Cooke (“House of the Dragon,” Sound of Metal), Laurie Davidson (“Mary & George”), and Waleed Zuaiter (“Gangs of London”) are also currently set to star in the series based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name.

In the series, Laura (Wright) wants for nothing. She has a glittering career, a loving husband, Howard (Zuaiter), and, above all, she has Daniel (Davidson), her precious only son. But Laura’s seemingly perfect life is blown apart when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), the girlfriend who changes everything. After an uncomfortable first meeting, Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is. While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. She’ll do anything to protect him. As things go from bad to deadly, the question is, is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive? The truth is a matter of perspective.

“The Girlfriend is a suspenseful family drama about the collapse of a mother and son’s bond, shown through relatable themes of love, greed, and power,” Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement. “This series speaks directly to our Pan-English strategy maintained by Rola Bauer and we’re thrilled to work with Imaginarium and Robin Wright in adapting Michelle Frances’ compelling story for our global Prime Video customers.”

“Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke are the perfect pairing for this tangled, spiralling thriller, and The Imaginarium is excited to have the best partner in Amazon MGM Studios,” Jonathan Cavendish of The Imaginarium said in a statement.

“I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast & crew … so excited!” Robin Wright said in a statement.

“To have Robin Wright both star and direct is beyond my wildest dreams,” Michelle Frances, author of the novel, said in a statement. “She is the perfect ‘Laura’ and I can’t wait to see her bring ‘The Girlfriend’ to the screen.”

Thriller ‘The Easterngate’ Is One of First Max Original Series in Poland

“The Easterngate,” which started production in March 2024, is one of the first Max Original series in Poland.

The suspense thriller series delves into the world of modern espionage during an emerging conflict and international unrest. It paints a vivid picture of the clandestine world while also exploring the personal struggles of an individual caught in the web of the secret service. On NATO’s eastern flank, Russian war maneuvers at a hotspot of strategic importance for the entire continent. The series follows the journey of Ewa Oginiec (Polish actress Lena Góra), who, after a personal drama, aims to exit the secret service and start over. Things take a twist when her partner, also an agent, gets outed by Russian intelligence and vanishes mysteriously.

The series explores the mechanism of provocation on the global stage, as well as the high stakes-battle between intelligence agencies in a world gripped by the complexities of hybrid warfare.

The title refers to the Suwałki Gap, which is a critical spot along the border between Poland and Lithuania, both NATO member states, as well as Belarus and Russia (including the Kaliningrad Oblast which is a separate exclave from the main Russian territory). The Suwałki Gap is widely recognized as one of Europe’s top three hotspots, a critical territory for protecting NATO’s eastern flank and maintaining regional stability.

The narrative unfolds during the spring of 2021 — in Belarus (Minsk), Poland and Russia.

Netflix Announces First Original Belgian TV Series

Netflix Sept. 3 announced its first Belgian original TV series, “Into the Night,” which will be directed by Belgian duo Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye (Over Water) and produced by Entre Chien et Loup.

“Into the Night” tells the story about retaining humanity in the face of a cosmic disaster, as a flight departs Brussels. The series will feature an international cast from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.

The show begins with a sudden solar event, as the sun inexplicably starts killing everything in its path. The show centers around the ‘lucky’ passengers and crew of an overnight flight out of Brussels, as they attempt to fly west — into the safety of the dark night.

The plane’s manifest is multinational and multilingual, with passengers rich and poor, young and old, civilian and military. The seemingly ordinary travelers share but one thing: A desire to survive the sun — and each other — by any means necessary.

“We are excited to work with this great international team of writers, producers, directors and cast to bring this unique series to life,” Michael Azzolino, director of international originals at Netflix, said in a statement.

The six-part series is written and created by Jason George (The Protector, Narcos) who serves as showrunner and executive producer. Other executive producers include Tomek Baginski (The Witcher, The Cathedral) and Jacek Dukaj, whose best selling novel The Old Axolotl the series is based upon.

“I was drawn to the idea that a commercial flight is a makeshift community, packing together strangers with different backgrounds and beliefs,” George said. “Sometimes, this leads to the forming of friendships. Sometimes, it’s arguments over armrests.”

Executive producer Tomek Bagiński said that in real life air travelers never really know the people they are traveling with. And now they are dependent upon one another for survival.

“To realize that maybe those people are now your tribe – people your survival depends on – this is a base for a great drama and a great thriller,” he said.

“Into the Night” will launch globally on Netflix in 2020.
