Nia Long Cast as Michael Jackson’s Mom in Lionsgate’s 2025 Biopic ‘Michael’

Lionsgate along with Universal Pictures International (UPI) Jan. 30 announced that Nia Long (Best Man, You People) will portray Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the Jackson family, in next year’s Michael Jackson theatrical biopic Michael.

The movies aims to produce an honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated entertainer who became known worldwide as the King of Pop. The film presents his triumphs and tragedies — from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius.

The movie’s worldwide release is slated for April 18, 2025. 

Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson is playing the late music icon. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer films) is directing the film with Oscar winner Graham King/GK Films (Bohemian Rhapsody, The Aviator, The Departed) producing, from a script by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan. 

Long will star opposite Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo, who is portraying Katherine Jackson’s husband, Joe Jackson.

Long most recently starred opposite Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the Netflix comedy You People from Kenya Barris, which at No. 1 on Netflix. The actress also recently reprised her role for the Peacock limited series “The Best Man: The Final Chapters,” which earned her a 2023 NAACP Award.

Long also headlined Missing, Sony Pictures’ follow-up to the 2018 box office release Searching. Long previously produced and starred in the Netflix thriller Fatal Affair, debuting at No. 1 on the platform. She also starred with Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie in the 2021 Apple TV+ feature film The Banker.

Lionsgate is distributing the film domestically, while UPI will handle all territories apart from Japan, which Lionsgate will oversee.

Drama ‘Life in a Year’ Coming to Digital and On Demand June 22

The drama  Life in a Year, starring Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne, will come out on digital and on demand June 22 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The story follows Daryn (Smith), a high school track star, scholar and aspiring rapper, who learns that his girlfriend Isabelle (Delevingne) is sick. He then plans to gift her a life’s worth of experiences in the last year she has left.

The film also stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Nia Long.
