John Waters’ Classic ‘Cry-Baby,’ With Johnny Depp, to Make 4K Ultra HD Debut May 28

Kino Lorber has announced the May 28 release of director John Waters’ groundbreaking 1990 musical comedy Cry-Baby, starring Johnny Depp, in a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray Disc combo pack.

The film, which has never before been available in 4K Ultra HD, is being issued as part of Kino Lorber’s Studio Classics line.

The release includes numerous bonus features, among them a new audio commentary by director Waters, new interviews with the cast and the crew, the “Bringing Up Baby” featurette, the 1990 documentary It Came From … Baltimore!, deleted scenes, and the original theatrical trailer.

Depp stars as 1950s teen rebel Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker, who falls in love with a society girl. The film features a large ensemble cast that includes Amy Locane, Susan Tyrrell, Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Polly Bergen, with appearances by Troy Donahue, Mink Stole, Joe Dallesandro, Joey Heatherton, David Nelson, Patricia Hearst, and Willem Dafoe.

The combo presents both the theatrical cut and the director’s cut, which is seven minutes longer. The 4K Ultra HD has the theatrical cut from a new HDR/Dolby Vision master, made from a 4K Scan of the 35mm original camera negative, on a triple-layered UHD100 disc. The Blu-ray Disc features the director’s cut from a new HD master, made from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative of the theatrical cut and a 4K scan of the director’s cut interpositive and an uprez of the SD master for the additional missing parts.

Cry-Baby will also be released separately on Blu-ray Disc.

Original ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie Slated to Make 4K Ultra HD Debut on Jan. 2

The Walt Disney Co.’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc for the first time on Jan. 2, 2022, with high dynamic range (HDR) picture quality and Dolby Atmos.

The 2003 film, based on a popular Disney theme park ride, spawned one of the most successful live-action franchises in history, with a worldwide theatrical gross of over $4.5 billion. The “Pirates” series, consisting of five films, is also the first movie franchise in which two or more films grossed in excess of $1 billion.

In the original “Pirates,” the roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow’s (Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor’s beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Kiera Knightly). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth’s childhood friend, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn’t know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead.

The movie has a run time of 143 minutes and is rated ‘PG-13.’

Crime Thriller ‘City of Lies’ Due on Blu-ray and DVD June 8

The crime thriller City of Lies will come out on Blu-ray (plus digital) and DVD June 8 from Saban Films and Lionsgate.

Based on the book LAbyrinth by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan, the film follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Notorious B.I.G. Johnny Depp stars as determined LAPD detective Russell Poole, who spends nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder, and Forest Whitaker as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with Poole in search of the elusive truth. Together they explore why the case remains cold — and why a secretive division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.

Johnny Depp Comedy ‘The Professor’ to Debut on Disc and Digital July 9 From Lionsgate

The dark comedy The Professor, starring Johnny Depp, will arrive on Blu-ray (plus digital), DVD, and digital July 9 from Lionsgate.

In the film, Depp plays a college professor who decides to live his last chapter with reckless abandon after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. To the shock of his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt) and school chancellor (Ron Livingston) — and the delight of his students — he leads a hilarious crusade against authority and hypocrisy. The film also stars Zoey Deutch.

Bonus features include a making-of featurette.

Warner Releasing ‘Crimes of Grindelwald’ Digitally Feb. 15, on Disc March 12

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald digitally Feb. 15, and on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray March 12.

The film is the 10th entry in the “Wizarding World” franchise, a sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and a prequel to the “Harry Potter” films.

The Blu-ray and the 4K UHD Blu-ray combo pack will include a digital download of an extended cut of the film with more than seven minutes of additional footage.

The film was written by “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates. The story involves Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) recruiting Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to stop the threat of the recently escaped magical criminal Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) from raising an army of pure-blood wizards to rule over non-magical beings.

The cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

Crimes of Grindelwald earned $158.5 million at the domestic box office.

Home video extras include an audio introduction by Yates, deleted scenes; the featurettes “J.K. Rowling: A World Revealed,” “Wizards on Screen, Fans in Real Life” and “Distinctly Dumbledore”; and “Unlocking Scene Secrets” featurettes including “The Return to Hogwarts,” “Newt’s Menagerie,” “Credence, Nagini and the Circus Arcanus,” “Paris and Place Cachée,” “Ministere des Affaires Magiques” and “Grindelwald’s Escape and the Ring of Fire.”

The 4K edition will feature Dolby Vision HDR and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
