GKIDS and Shout! Factory have set a Sept. 1 home release date for Children of the Sea, a 2019 Japanese animated film directed by Ayumu Watanabe and based on the manga of the same title by Daisuke Igarashi.
The film will be available digitally, as a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack, or on standalone DVD and is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release in select cinemas on Aug. 11 and 12.
The film follows the story of a young girl living in Japan named Ruka whose father works in an aquarium. When she was younger she witnessed a ghost swimming in the water at the aquarium, which ignited in her a strong curiosity of the ocean. When two boys who were raised in the sea by dugongs are brought to the aquarium, Ruka feels drawn to them and begins to realize that she has the same sort of supernatural connection to the ocean that they do.

The Blu-Ray + DVD combo pack will additionally include the exclusive “Turep – Looking for Children of the Sea,” a feature-length pseudo-documentary from the creators of Children of the Sea that explores the legends that inspired the film and engages with its larger themes.
