Paramount+ to Bow ‘Grease’ Diner Interactive Experience

Paramount+ has teamed with Popsugar to bring the iconic Grease diner, the Frosty Palace, to life in an exclusive two-day interactive experience in Los Angeles April 6 and 7.

The pop-up experience will celebrate the upcoming Paramount+ original musical series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” which will feature the iconic diner, first seen on screen in the classic 1978 Grease film, throughout the first season.

The Frosty Palace two-day interactive experience will take place at Mel’s Diner (8585 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif. 90069) and will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. PT on both days.

Guests attending the Frosty Palace experience will be surrounded by retro 1950s tunes and custom décor, all while enjoying twists on familiar diner fare and partaking in social media-worthy photo moments. The experience will also feature one-of-a-kind “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies”-branded merchandise giveaways, customized on-site so fans can join their favorite girl gang.

For those attending on Thursday night, Paramount+ is hosting a special drive-in-themed screening of the “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” premiere episode at 8:30 p.m. PT. Reservations are limited and required in advance and are now open to book here.

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” will premiere with two episodes on April 6, exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada. The series will premiere the following day in the United Kingdom, Australia, Latin America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. The premiere date in South Korea will be announced at a later date.

Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode season will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays for subscribers in the United States and Canada, and on Fridays for subscribers in the United Kingdom, Australia, Latin America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France.

‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ to Premiere April 6 on Paramount+

The Paramount+ original musical series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” will premiere on the streaming service April 6 in the United States and Canada, with new episodes available weekly on Thursdays thereafter. It will premiere the following day in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France, with new episodes on subsequent Fridays.

The 10-episode season serves as a prequel to 1978’s Grease and its 1982 sequel. The show takes place in 1954, four years before the events of the original film, as four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” is written and executive produced by Annabel Oakes (“Atypical,” “Transparent”), who also serves as showrunner and director. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey executive produce for Temple Hill, Adam Fishbach also executive produces and Alethea Jones (“Made For Love,” “Dollface,” EVIL) directed the pilot plus two more episodes and executive produces. Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey executive produce via PICTURESTART, and Grace Gilroy also produces. Choreography is by Jamal Sims, who also directed, and music is by Grammy Award nominee and executive music producer Justin Tranter.

‘Dark Knight,’ ‘Grease,’ ‘Shrek’ Join National Film Registry

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden Dec. 14 announced the annual selection of American films to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, this year putting a spotlight on diverse filmmakers.

“The National Film Registry is an important record of American history, culture and creativity, captured through one of the great American artforms, our cinematic experience,” Hayden said. “With the inclusion of diverse filmmakers, we are not trying to set records but rather to set the record straight by spotlighting the astonishing contributions women and people of color have made to American cinema, despite facing often-overwhelming hurdles.”

Under the National Film Preservation Act, each year the National Film Registry chooses 25 films for preservation due to their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage. This year’s selections include a record number of films directed by women and filmmakers of color, including 10 directed by women and seven by people of color.

Among the class of 2020 are the innovative silent film Suspense, which was co-directed by a woman in 1913; Sidney Poitier’s Oscar-winning performance in 1963’s Lilies of the Field; the 1978 mega-hit musical Grease; 1980’s musical comedy The Blues Brothers; the animated blockbuster Shrek, co-directed by Vicky Jenson in 2001; and one of the biggest public vote getters, director Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight.

“This is not only a great honor for all of us who worked on The Dark Knight, this is also a tribute to all of the amazing artists and writers who have worked on the great mythology of Batman over the decades,” Nolan said.

Other selections include 1993’s The Joy Luck Club from director Wayne Wang; the atypical war film The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow; Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film A Clockwork Orange; and the 2010 PBS documentary Freedom Riders, which becomes the most-recent film in the registry.

The registry now includes 800 films, a fraction of the 1.3 million films in the Library’s collections. More information about the National Film Registry can be found at loc.gov/film.

 

The Librarian of Congress makes the annual registry selections after conferring with the distinguished members of the National Film Preservation Board (NFPB) and a cadre of Library specialists. Also considered were more than 5,500 titles nominated by the public. Films must be at least 10 years old. Nominations for next year will be accepted through the fall at loc.gov/programs/national-film-preservation-board/film-registry/nominate/.

In addition to advising the Librarian of Congress on the annual selection of titles to the National Film Registry, the NFPB also provides counsel on national preservation planning policy. Many titles named to the registry have already been preserved by the copyright holders, filmmakers or other archives. In cases where a selected title has not already been preserved, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film will be preserved by some entity and available for future generations, either through the Library’s motion picture preservation program or through collaborative ventures with other archives, motion picture studios and independent filmmakers.

The Packard Campus is a state-of-the-art facility where the nation’s library acquires, preserves and provides access to the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts and sound recordings (loc.gov/avconservation/). It is home to more than 8.8 million collection items.

In 2013, the Library of Congress released a report that conclusively determined that 70 percent of the nation’s silent feature films have been lost forever and only 14 percent exist in their original 35 mm format.

‘Grease’ Celebrates 40th at Cannes

Paramount Pictures hosted a screening of Grease at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary. Star John Travolta and director Randal Kleiser took part in the Cinéma de la Plage event May 16 where the restored film was shown to fans an outdoor screening on the beach. Grease: 40th Anniversary Edition is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital.

Paramount Preps 40th Anniversary Edition of ‘Grease’

Paramount Home Media Distribution is readying a 40th anniversary edition of the musical Grease for April 24 release on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital.

Featuring star-making performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, Grease has given the pop-culture world such memorable songs as “Greased Lightnin,” “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” “Summer Nights,” “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” “Beauty School Drop Out” and the title track.

Paramount says it worked with director Randal Kleiser to restore Grease “to its original vibrancy, with the highest quality sound, picture resolution and color.” The original negative was scanned and received extensive clean up and color correction using previously unavailable digital restoration tools such as high dynamic range (HDR) technology.  In addition, the audio was enhanced from a six-track mix created for the film’s original 70mm release, giving the music more clarity.

The Grease 40th anniversary edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc combo packs include the fully restored version of the film plus an all-new, in-depth exploration of the little-known origins of what would become a Broadway play and then a feature film.  “Grease: A Chicago Story” features new interviews with writer Jim Jacobs and original cast members of the Chicago show. In addition, the discs include the original song the title sequence was animated to and an alternate ending salvaged from the original black-and-white16mm work print discovered by director Randal Kleiser.

Both the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Packs also feature more than an hour of previously released bonus material, including a sing-along, vintage interviews with the cast, deleted scenes and more.  Plus, the Blu-ray Combo comes in collectible packaging with 16 pages of images laid out like a high school yearbook.  In addition, a Grease Collection will be available in a Steelbook Locker, which includes the 40th anniversary Blu-ray of Grease, as well as Grease 2 and Grease: Live! on Blu-ray for the first time.
