‘Life of the Party,’ ‘Breaking In’ Take Two Top Spots on Redbox Disc, Digital Charts

The newly released Melissa McCarthy comedy Life of the Party, from Warner Bros., topped both Redbox charts the week ended Aug. 13.

The film, with a domestic box office haul of just under $53 million, debuted at No. 1 on both Redbox’s kiosk rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals, and the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Life of the Party is the third film directed by Ben Falcone and written by Falcone and McCarthy (the two earlier films were 2014’s Tammy and 2016’s The Boss). The film stars McCarthy as a newly divorced mother who returns to college to finish her degree, and winds up bonding with her daughter’s friends.

Another new release, Universal Pictures’ Breaking In, debuted at No. 2, also on both charts. The revenge thriller, about a mother (Gabrielle Union) who must protect her children after the mansion of her recently deceased father is invaded by a quartet of burglars, earned $46.5 million in U.S. theaters.

Both films were released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Aug. 7 and digital two weeks earlier (on July 24).

Lionsgate’s Overboard remake, which debuted at No. 1 the prior week, slipped to No. 3, also on both charts.  .

Rampage, the science-fiction monster movie based on the video game series of the same name, slipped to No. 4 on both charts, after two weeks at No. 2.

Rounding out the top five on both charts was Ready Player One, the latest sci-fi film from Steven Spielberg, down from No. 3 the prior week.
