Drama ‘Drowning by Numbers’ Due on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD May 30 From Severin and MVD

The darkly comedic Drowning by Numbers (1988) will be released on Blu-ray Disc and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as well as Danza Macabra Volume One: The Italian Gothic Collection on Blu-ray, May 30 from Severin Films and MVD Entertainment Group.

In between his celebrated The Belly of an Architect and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, writer/director Peter Greenaway shocked/delighted international audiences with the slyly deranged black comedy Drowning by Numbers. Oscar nominee Dame Joan Plowright (Enchanted April), four-time BAFTA Award nominee Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply) and two-time Golden Globe nominee Joely Richardson (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) star as three generations of women who murder their husbands. Bernard Hill (“The Lord of the Rings,” Titanic) co-stars. The release features a new 4K scan from the original negative personally supervised by Greenaway. The four-film Danza Macabra Volume One: The Italian Gothic Collection celebrates a genre known for its castles, crypts and candelabras, but that also embraced themes of violence, madness and sexual deviance. In 1964’s The Monster of the Opera, director Renato Polselli and screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi craft a surreal erotic shocker set within a contemporary dance troupe. Perhaps the genre’s rarest film, the berserk supernatural narrative of 1965’s The Seventh Grave also makes it among the strangest. For 1970’s Scream of the Demon Lover, director José Luis Merino gathers classic traditions, then strips them naked and ties them to a torture rack. And 1971’s Lady Frankenstein delivers iconic EuroCult talent on both sides of the camera for one of the most luridly entertaining shockers of the decade. The films in this collection are fully restored from their original negatives, with 12-plus collective hours of special features.

Dramas ‘I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses’ and ‘The Dogs,’ and the Spanish Erotic Film ‘Sex Is Crazy’ Due on Blu-ray Feb. 28 From MVD and Severin

The dramas I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses and The Dogs and the Spanish erotic film Sex Is Crazy are due on Blu-ray Disc Feb. 28 from Severin Films and MVD Entertainment Group.

From writer-director Murray Markowitz, the shocking drama I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses is inspired by one of Canada’s most infamous homicides. In the film, when a former model (Elke Sommer, Baron Blood) is brutally murdered, her wealthy husband (Donald Pilon, The Uncanny) is arrested for the slaying. But the trial that follows will uncover a lurid saga of illicit lovers, escaped serial killers, and enough graphic mayhem to merit its condemnation as a “Video Nasty.” Chuck Shamata (The House by the Lake), Cindy Girling (Meatballs) and five-time Canadian heavyweight champion George Chuvalo co-star in this 1978 Canuxploitation rarity — also known as Left for Dead and Drop Dead, Dearest — featuring the first score by three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore (“The Lord of the Rings”), now scanned in 2K from the National Archive’s only known 35mm print. Extras include audio commentary with filmmaker and historian Stephen Broomer; an interview with Markowitz; an interview with Pilon; “Crimes of Dispassion,” film programmer Eric Peretti on the Demeter case and I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses; and a trailer.

Five years after his Shock Treatment stunned European audiences, cult fantastique writer/director Alain Jessua delivered the startling French thriller The Dogs. In the film, in a corporate suburb outside Paris, the community’s new doctor discovers its leading citizens all get their dogs from a wealthy, charismatic trainer (Oscar nominee Gérard Depardieu) — dogs that have a ferocious appetite for immigrants, rowdy youths, people of color and anyone who challenges the status quo. Victor Lanoux (Cousin, Cousine), Nicole Calfan (The Burglars) and Fanny Ardant (Confidentially Yours) co-star in the film, now scanned in 2K from the interpositive for the first time in America. Special features include “Hounds and Music,” an interview with composer René Koering; “Jessua Lives,” an interview with Culturopoing Film Critic Emmanuel Le Gagne; and the trailer.

In Spain in 1981 with the dictatorship over and censorship gone, writer/director Jess Franco (Diamonds of Kilimandjaro) returned to his native country to make a series of increasingly brazen films for Tritón that included Sinfonia Erotica, Two Female Spies With Flowered Panties and Sex Is Crazy. In the crazy comedy Sex Is Crazy — now scanned in 2K from the original negative recently discovered in a Bilbao seminary — an actress (Lina Romay, Female Vampire) is performing an outrageous stage show depicting aliens kidnapping Earth women and making them pregnant so that they can give birth to 600 babies an hour. However, when some real aliens actually see the show, they decide that it’s all a very good idea. Special features include “Jess Is Crazy,” an interview with Franco expert Dr. Álex Mendíbil; “Franco/Godard,” an interview with Stephen Thrower, author of Flowers of Perversion: The Delirious Cinema of Jesús Franco; and “In the Land of Franco Part 7.”

In Love Camp 7 (1969), during the darkest days of World War II, two young American WAC officers volunteer to infiltrate a depraved Nazi Love Camp on a desperate rescue mission. Once inside, they are subjected to unspeakable indignities and horrifying humiliations at the hands of their sadistic captors. Launching the notorious “Nazisploitation” craze of the 1970s, the film comes from writer/producer/star Bob Cresse (The Scavengers), producer Dave Friedman (Blood Feast), and director/cinematographer Lee Frost (The Black Gestapo). One of the 72 U.K. video nasties — banned in Britain to this day — the film is presented in the original uncensored version in a 4K restoration from its recently discovered camera negative. Special features include “Nazithon: Decadence and Destruction”; the theatrical trailer; and a poster and still gallery.

When the deranged emperor (Vladimir Brajovic of The Story of O) falls for an insatiable gladiatrix (Betty Roland of Mattei’s Caligula Reincarnated as Nero), their reign will launch a mind-bending bacchanal of torture, sodomy, incest, castration, borrowed footage and aroused livestock. Françoise Blanchard (The Living Dead Girl), Florence Guérin (Cozzi’s The Black Cat) and Sal Boris (The Beast in Heat) co-star in this saga of saturnalian obscenity, presented in both the explicit Italian version and the unrated U.S. Release scanned in 2K from the original negatives. Laura Gemser (Black Emanuelle), Gabriele Tinti (Endgame), Charles Borromel (Absurd) and future director Michele Soavi (Cemetery Man) star in this epic of orgiastic excess written by D’Amato and Luigi Montefiori/George Eastman with a score by Carlo Maria Cordio, presented in both the explicit Italian version and the U.S. release scanned in 2K from the original negatives. Special features include “The Orgy Of Power,” an interview with actor David Brandon; “A False True Story,” an interview with screenwriter Luigi Montefiori; “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy,” an interview with actor Mark Shannon; deleted scenes; the U.K. video trailer; and the CD soundtrack.

Hugh Keays-Byrne (Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road), Helen Morse (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Roger Ward, Vincent Gil, Reg Evans of Mad Max fame, and members of the Sydney Hells Angels co-star in the film, which features an uncut 4K scan from original vault elements supervised by Harbutt himself shortly before his death.
