Anime Film ‘House of the Lost on the Cape’ Coming to Blu-ray, Digital Sept. 27

Shout! Factory and Eleven Arts have announced the Sept. 27 release of The House of the Lost on the Cape, an anime feature based on the award-winning Japanese novel by Sachiko Kashiwaba.

The film will be available as a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack as well as a digital download.

Directed by Shinya Kawatsura (Non Non Biyori, Kokoro Connect), The House of the Lost on the Cape follows 17-year-old runaway Yui and 8-year-old Hiyori, who lost her family and her voice. They have no place to go when they run into Kiwa, a strange old lady. She offers them a place to stay in a slightly banged-up old house overlooking the sea. Despite joining Kiwa on a whim, the two girls find comfort in Mayoiga, a legendary house, said to look after lost travelers, and the warm hospitality of Kiwa. Both girls’ damaged hearts begin to heal little by little.

Available for the first time in North America, the film will include bonus features such as a special Q&A with director Shinya Kawatsura at the Annecy Festival, and Yui and Kiwa’s secret recipes.

The House of the Lost on the Cape won Best Animation Film at the 76th annual Mainichi Film Awards and was an Official Selection in feature film competition at the prestigious 2022 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Shout! Factory, Eleven Arts Set July 5 Home Dates for ‘Ryoma! The Prince of Tennis’

Eleven Arts and Shout! Factory on July 5 will release the CG anime movie adventure Ryoma! The Prince of Tennis through digital retailers and as a Blu-ray Disc + DVD combo pack.

Directed by Hiroshi Koujina, the film is based on the blockbuster Japanese sports manga series and its sequels created by renowned manga author Takeshi Konomi, with 60 million copies sold over 22 years.

Ryoma! is the first CG anime movie from this popular franchise. Featuring an all-new storyline with music and lyrics by Konomi, the film becomes available for home viewers after a nationwide theatrical release.

The Blu-ray + DVD combo pack includes the movie with both English audio and the original Japanese audio (with English subtitles). The English dub features a cast of high-profile voice actors, including Ry McKeand (Attack on Titan, SK8 the Infinity) as Ryoma Echizen, David Wald (Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission) as Nanjiro Echizen, Xanthe Huynh (Persona 5, Sailor Moon Eternal) as Sakuno Ryuzaki, Jonah Scott (Beastars, SK8 the Infinity) as Kunimitsu Tezuka, Tiana Camacho (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) as Emerald, Edward Bosco (Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters) as Wolf, and William Ofoegbu (Next A-Class) as Boo.

The disc package also includes the full-length alternative cut of the movie that includes different scenes featuring Hyotei team captain Keigo Atobe and Shitenhoji team captain Kuranosuke Shiraishi.

The film finds Ryoma — inspired by his tennis champion father — determined to train in the United States after winning a championship in Japan. He runs into his classmate Sakuno right as she gets into trouble with street gangs, and Ryoma accepts a tennis match against the villains to save her. During the intense tennis battle, the shock of two tennis balls ramming into one another disrupts the flow. Ryoma and Sakuno are suddenly transported back into the past, decades before, when Ryoma’s father challenged his last match at a championship in the U.S.

Anime Film ‘Poupelle of Chimney Town’ Gets PVOD, Digital and Disc Release Dates

Shout! Factory and Eleven Arts have announced the May 3 premium-video-on-demand (PVOD) release of the acclaimed animated adventure film Poupelle of Chimney Town.

The film’s PVOD release follows a nationwide theatrical run. Poupelle will become available for purchase through retail digital channels May 17, followed by its debut on Blu-ray Disc (in a combo pack, with a DVD) on May 31.

Based on a popular Japanese picture book by celebrated author and creator Akihiro Nishino, the film was directed by Yusuke Hirota and produced at Tokyo’s famed STUDIO4ºC. Poupelle of Chimney Town is the story of young Lubicchi living among the thick smoke from the chimneys of his isolated town, yearning to see the “stars” — to know the truth — his father always told him about. One Halloween night he meets Poupelle, a man made of garbage, and together they look to the sky as their adventure begins. The English-language voice cast includes Tony Hale (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Raul Corbo, Stephen Root (Finding Nemo, “King of the Hill”), Misty Lee and Hasan Minhaj.

The Poupelle of Chimney Town Blu-ray + DVD combo pack will include two versions of the film — English audio and Japanese audio with English subtitles — a variety of bonus content, and an exclusive art booklet with a special message from executive producer and creator Akihiro Nishino.

An official selection of Annecy International Animation Film Festival and numerous other renowned festivals, Poupelle of Chimney Town has been recognized with several honors and movie awards nominations, including a Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Animation of the Year, a Cristal Award nomination from Annecy for Best Feature, an ANNIE awards nomination for Best Music — Feature, and a Satoshi Kon Award nomination from Fantasia for Best Animated Feature.

‘Gintama The Very Final’ Anime Feature Readied for Disc, Digital Release

Gintama The Very Final, the third and final chapter in anime legend Hideaki Sorachi’s original “Gintama” manga series, will be released in a Blu-ray Disc and DVD combo pack on Feb. 8.

The film will be available two weeks earlier for digital purchase on Jan. 25.

From Eleven Arts and Shout! Factory, the new feature film makes its North American home entertainment debut following a theatrical release this past fall.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes two versions of the film — English voice cast and the original Japanese audio with English subtitles) — and an exclusive 16-page booklet packed with character art and storyboards. Consumers who  order Gintama The Very Final Blu-ray/DVD combo pack from Shout! Factory will receive an exclusive poster, while supplies last.

Directed by Chizuru Miyawaki, Gintama The Very Final adapts some of the final moments of the original manga with new elements specifically crafted for the film. The lead roles of the Odd Jobs members are reprised by the team of voice talent from the third season of the “Gintama” series, including  Michael Daingerfield as Gintoki Sakata, Cole Howard as Shinpachi Shumura, and Jocelyne Loewen as Kagura. Kyle Colby Jones, who voiced the character Shinsuke Takasugi, and the ADR writer and director for Gintama: The Movie, reprises his roles for Gintama The Very Final.

 

Anime ‘Shirobako: The Movie’ Slated for Home Release

Shout! Factory will release Shirobako: The Movie as a Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack, and for digital download, Dec. 7.

A love letter to the anime industry from Eleven Arts Studios, the anime film about making anime is a sequel to the anime television series of the same name, which has also been adapted as a manga series. Director Tsutomu Mizushima (Girls und Panzer, Prison School) and screenwriter Michiko Yokote (Naruto, Cowboy Bebop) lent their talents to the movie after working on the series.

Four years after the events of the series, the movie finds Musashino Animation has gone through drastic changes and things are looking bleak for the studio. One day, Aoi Miyamori is offered a role managing a new theatrical animation project. With only a few months left before the deadline, it’s up to Aoi to work alongside both familiar faces and new to finish the project in time.

Anime Film ‘The Wonderland’ Available for Home Viewing Oct. 6

Shout! Factory and Eleven Arts have announced an Oct. 6 home release date for The Wonderland, a 2019 Japanese animated coming-of-age fantasy adventure film directed by Keiichi Hara.

The film will be available for digital download, on demand, as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and also as a standalone DVD.

Based on the 1988 children’s story Chikashitru Kara no Fushigi na Tabi (Strange Journey from the Basement), the film follows the story of a girl named Akane with little self-confidence, who, on her birthday, meets a mysterious alchemist named Hippocrates who brings her through a basement and into a fantastical world full of magic and color. Though things seem peaceful on the surface, he reveals this world is in danger and Akane finds herself being labeled as the Wonderland’s savior.

Bonus features include interviews with the Japanese voice cast, featuring the talent of Mayu Matsuoka (Young Shoya, A Silent Voice) as Akane and audio commentary with character designer and concept artist Ilya Kuvshinov.

Shout! Factory, Eleven Arts Set Home Release Dates for ‘Sound! Euphonium: The Movie’

Shout! Factory and Eleven Arts on March 9 announced home release dates for Sound! Euphonium: The Movie — Our Promise: A Brand New Day.

The anime film will be released on digital download and On Demand on May 19, and in a Blu-ray Disc plus DVD combo pack on June 6.

Sound! Euphonium comes from Kyoto Animation, the critically acclaimed studio behind A Silent Voice: The Movie, Liz and the Blue Bird, and Violet Evergarden.

Bonus features include interviews with the English voice cast, featuring the talent of Christian La Monte (Shuichi Tsukamoto, director of English dub), Laura Post (Reina Kousaka) and Xanthe Huynh (Satsuki Suzuki).

In the film, Kumiko is now in her second year at Kitauji High School, “and with a new year comes new problems,” according to a news release. “As if making it to Nationals wasn’t hard enough, Kumiko is tasked with mentoring the concert band’s troublesome first years — each with their own distinct personality and problems to solve.
