Nielsen: Netflix’s ‘Day Shift,’ ‘The Sandman,’ ‘Stranger Things’ Topped Weekly Household Streaming Through Aug. 21

Netflix, once again, dominated Nielsen’s weekly household streaming, grabbing nine of the top 10 streamed titles across Nielsen household televisions for the week ended Aug. 21.

In its second weekend of release, original movie Day Shift topped all content, generating 957 million minutes streamed, slightly ahead of perennial chart topper “The Sandman,” with 946 million minutes across 11 episodes, and ongoing cult favorite “Stranger Things,” with 919 million minutes across 34 episodes.

Day Shift stars Jamie Foxx is a blue-collar dad hoping to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter Paige (Zion Broadnax) and to stay in the good graces of his estranged wife Jocelyn (Meagan Good). His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.

The movie finished No. 4 in its premiere week with 982 million minutes viewed. The week was the first in 13 weeks to not have at least one program exceed 1 billion minutes streamed.

Netflix: ‘The Sandman’ and ‘Day Shift’ Top Weekly English-Language Content Lists, ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ Is Most-Viewed Title

The Sandman” topped Netflix’s English-language TV List for the third week in a row with 77.24 million hours viewed and appeared in the top 10 in 91 countries for the week ended Aug. 21.

Additionally, streamers were treated to a two-part bonus episode of the dark fantasy series, which featured the stories “A Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope.” Subscribers also sought out “Never Have I Ever” as seasons one and two (17.01 million hours viewed and 16.77 million hours viewed, respectively) jumped into the top 10 list. Season three was in the No. 2 slot with 59.45 million hours viewed. “Stranger Things” season four with 28.8 million hours viewed, season three of “Locke & Key” with 28.31 million hours viewed, and season four of “Virgin River” with 20.47 million hours viewed all had staying power. “Mystery thriller Echoes” entered the list with 25.63 million hours viewed. The limited series was in the top 10 in 31 countries. 

Fans continued to bond with “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” The Korean drama continued to hold the No. 1 spot on the non-English TV List with 77.43 million hours viewed, making it the most viewed title for the week. The series also climbed the “Most Popular” list to the No. 6 spot, with a total of 341.46 million hours viewed. New entrants on the list during the week included Mexican drama “High Heat” (27.68 million hours viewed) and Spanish thriller “A Girl in the Mirror” (7.92 million hours viewed). Korean thriller “A Model Family” jumped to the third spot with 19.77 million hours viewed. Returning favorites were K-drama “Alchemy of Souls,” Turkish drama “Another Self,” Spanish drama “Alba” and Brazilian drama “Good Morning Verônica.”

On the English Films List, J.J. Perry’s Day Shift staked its claim in the top spot with 63.39 million hours viewed. The vampire buddy comedy was in the top 10 in 93 countries. Lili Reinhart’s romantic comedy Look Both Ways took viewers on parallel journeys. Directed by Wanuri Kahiu and written by April Prosser, the film entered the list at No. 2 with 48.06 million hours viewed. Love takes an unexpected turn as The Next 365 Days debuted with 39.31 million hours viewed, appearing in the top 10 in 92 countries. After four weeks, Purple Hearts remained in the hearts and minds of viewers, pulling in an additional 23.41 million hours viewed. The film also entered the “Most Popular” list in the seventh spot and has now amassed 220.61 million hours viewed. Kicking off the new season of the sports anthology series “Untold,” the documentary Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist captivated viewers and had 20.05 million hours viewed. The Russo Brothers-directed action-adventure The Gray Man was in the sixth spot and had 14.64 million hours viewed. Epic animated adventure The Sea Beast continued to keep families entertained as the film had 8.12 million hours viewed. Closing out the list was the cute and cuddly documentary Inside the Mind of a Cat with 6.99 million hours viewed. 

Debuts on the non-English Films List included Norwegian teen drama Royalteen at No. 1 with 11.91 million hours viewed, and Japanese sci-fi film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar coming in fourth with 5.82 million hours viewed. Fans flocked to some of their favorites — Spanish thriller Code Name: Emperor, Korean action-adventure Carter, which also landed in the No. 8 spot on the “Most Popular” list with a total of 61.15 million hours viewed, Indian dark comedy Darlings, German Horror Blood Red Sky, Argentinian documentary Bankrobbers: The Last Great Heist and Indian action-adventure RRR — all made an appearance on the list.
