‘Encanto’ Again Leads North American Weekend Box Office

The second weekend of Disney’s Encanto held off Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife to top a slow North American weekend box office (through Dec. 5) with $12.3 million in projected revenue across less than 4,000 screens. The tally ups the animated title’s domestic haul to $57.6 million.

Encanto will be released on the Disney+ SVOD platform on Christmas Eve (Nov. 24).

Runner-up Afterlife generated $10.3 million to see its stateside exhibition gross top $100 million. The second weekend of Lady Gaga-starrer House of Gucci saw $6.7 million in ticket sales, upping the drama’s total to $33.6 million.

Fathom Events faith-based newcomer, Christmas With the Chosen: The Messengers, realized an estimated $4 million in ticket sales, $8.9 million in overall revenue, making it Fathom’s top-grossing release.

The box office is expected to see an upcoming spark with the Dec. 10 release of Steven Spielberg’s musical West Side Story from 20th Century Studios, followed by the Dec. 17 bow of Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Matrix: Resurrections on Dec. 22.

While West Side Story has strong reviews, No Way Home broke advance ticket sale records at AMC Theaters, Regal and Cinemark, in addition to online ticket platform Fandango. The superhero movie will be the first webslinger release in more than two years.
