WarnerMedia Names Channing Dungey Chairman, Warner Bros. TV Group

Unemployment didn’t last long for Channing Dungey. Just days after departing Netflix as VP of original series, Dungey Oct. 19 was named chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group. She will replace Peter Roth, who is stepping down in 2021.

Dungey had been at Netflix just two years after becoming the first black executive to head a broadcast network entertainment division at Disney-owned ABC Television. Warner Bros. Television is one of the largest producers of episodic programming.

WarnerMedia Studios and Network CEO Ann Sarnoff called Dungey’s hiring a homecoming.

“She was a production executive at Warner Bros. early in her career, and we’re excited to have her rejoin the studio,” Sarnoff said in a statement.

Dungey made headlines in 2018 when she called out Roseanne Barr for supposedly racist tweets, calling the comedienne’s comments “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Barr was fired from the successful reboot “Roseanne,” which was subsequently canceled and retooled as “The Conners.”

“Channing is one of the most talented, visionary, creative and respected executives working in television today,” Sarnoff said. “She’s a great choice to lead the television group as it continues to grow its production operations for HBO Max, while also maintaining its standing as the industry’s leading independent supplier of programming to all outlets.”

Channing Dungey Departs Netflix After Just Two Years

Channing Dungey, VP of original series at Netflix, is leaving the SVOD giant after just two years on the job. Dungey, the first black executive to head a broadcast network entertainment division, had joined Netflix in 2018 following a career at Disney-owned ABC Television.

Dungey made headlines in 2018 when she called out Rosanne Barr for her racist tweets, calling the comedienne’s comments “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Barr was fired from the successful reboot “Roseanne”, which was subsequently canceled and retooled as “The Conners.”

The move comes following the rise of CCO Ted Sarandos to co-CEO, and the departure of longtime Netflix executive Cindy Holland, to whom Dungey reported. Bela Bajaria, who was promoted to head global TV production following Holland’s departure, wished the best for Dungey.

“I’ve known Channing for many years, and it’s been a pleasure working closer with her,” Bajaria said in a statement. “She’s a terrific executive who’s always carved her own path, and although we will miss her, we wish her all the best for the future.”

Channing Dungey Joins Netflix as VP of Original Content

Former ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, who made headlines last year yanking “Roseanne” off the air after its star, Roseanne Barr, made a racist tweet, is joining Netflix as VP of original content.

Dungey, who reports to Cindy Holland, VP of original content, joins Netflix in February. In November it was announced Dungey would be leaving ABC after two years.

While at ABC, she helped get series, “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” among other series, on the air.

“We’re delighted to be adding Channing’s expertise, leadership and deep experience to Netflix, and I look forward to partnering with her as we continue to grow and evolve our global network,” Holland said in a statement. “I have been a fan of her character and approach from our early days as executives.”

“Channing is a creative force whose taste and talent have earned her the admiration of her peers across the industry,” added CCO Ted Sarandos. “She’s a risk taker and ground-breaker and talent love working with her. I couldn’t be happier to welcome her to Netflix.”
