Apple Previews New Operating System for Apple TV 4K, Announces Deal With Charter

Apple June 4 previewed the tvOS 12 operating system for Apple TV 4K with support for Dolby Atmos audio, new features to easily access shows and movies, and aerial screensavers shot from space. The company also announced that Charter Communications, the second-largest cable operator in the United States, will begin offering Apple TV 4K to its customers.

Apple TV 4K debuted last fall. The service offers customers the largest collection of 4K HDR movies, according to Apple, including free 4K HDR upgrades to previously purchased movies in customers’ iTunes libraries.

“This fall, iTunes will be home to the largest collection of Dolby Atmos-supported movies anywhere, and these titles will also include Dolby Atmos audio for free,” according to an Apple press release. “With tvOS 12, Apple TV 4K will be the only streaming player both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified, delivering the highest quality cinematic experience of stunning 4K HDR visuals and immersive sound that flows all around in three-dimensional space.”

Also, later this year, Charter customers in nearly 50 million households will have access to live channels and tens of thousands of on-demand programs via an all-new Spectrum TV app on their Apple TV 4K, iPhone and iPad, integrated with Siri and the Apple TV App, Apple reported. In addition, as part of this collaboration, Charter will be offering iPhones and iPads to customers as they grow their mobile presence. Charter joins AT&T’s DirecTV Now in the United States, CANAL+ in France and Salt in Switzerland, which have begun offering customers Apple TV 4K with their services.

The Apple TV App on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV allows customers to find and watch TV shows and movies from more than 100 participating video apps in 10 countries, according to Apple. Single sign-on for Apple TV and iOS has allowed users to sign in once to get access to all the video apps available through their cable subscription. With tvOS 12, Apple further simplifies the authentication process with “zero sign-on.” Apple TV detects the user’s broadband network and automatically signs them in to all the supported apps they receive through their subscription — no typing required, according to Apple. Zero sign-on begins with Charter later this year and will expand to other providers over time.

In collaboration with the International Space Station National Lab and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, Apple unveiled new aerials shot from space by NASA astronauts, “so Apple TV customers can enjoy even more stunning scenes filmed in 4K HDR,” according to Apple. Aerial screensavers will also be more interactive, allowing viewers to see the location information and swipe between dozens of aerials, the company noted.

Additional tvOS 12 features for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV 4th generation make it easier for customers to access shows and movies, according to Apple:

— With iOS 12, users can securely AutoFill passwords from iPhone and iPad to Apple TV to easily sign in to Apple TV apps.

— The Apple TV Remote will be automatically added to Control Center on iPhone or iPad for Apple TV users, giving users quick access to Apple TV controls.

— Home control systems such as Control4, Crestron and Savant can be used to control Apple TV, including using Siri for voice search and control.

“The arrival of Dolby Atmos on Apple TV, ‘zero sign-on,’ a deal with Charter Spectrum, a new TV OS and, perhaps more tangentially, Siri support for third-party apps, all point towards an evolutionary product, rather than a revolutionary one, which we have become accustomed to from Apple over the years,” read a Futuresource Consulting blog in response to the announcements.

Futuresource estimates that there were approximately 21 million Apple TVs in use worldwide at the end of 2017, approaching half of these in the United States.

“Apple TV continues to add features, build partnerships and is clearly striving to offer the best quality digital streamer experience there is — albeit at a higher price than its competitors,” read the Futuresource blog. “Service partnerships will therefore be key to driving the attractiveness of the product and a channels approach, akin or better than Amazon Channels and Roku’s equivalent, will also be hugely important if Apple still wants to become the main entertainment hub in the home — something which Amazon arguably has gained a lead in.”

The new tvOS will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV 4th generation. For more information, visit apple.com/apple-tv-4K.

LG Launches Compact CineBeam 4K Laser Projector in U.S.

LG Electronics has launched its LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector in the United States, “allowing any room in the house to turn into a movie theater,” according to a press release from the company.

The projector will be available at select U.S. retailers starting this week at a suggested retail price of $2,999.99.

“The LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector is a true game changer in the projector market,” said Tim Alessi, head of home entertainment product marketing at LG Electronics USA, in a statement. “Portability and versatility combined with 4K technology delivers the ultimate large-screen home cinema experience in a compact size. This projector will lead the way in changing how consumers view 4K content in any room at home.”

“LG’s engineers and designers took on the challenge of downsizing the LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector without sacrificing image quality,” according to the release. “The result is a premium device half the size of most competing 4K projectors while remaining price competitive.”

The LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector earned the CES 2018 Best of Innovation Award for “its bright, detailed 4K picture quality and sleek, compact design delivering the ultimate home cinema experience,” LG noted. The company also noted its inclusion in the latest edition of Red Dot’s Best of the Best Product Design Award.

“With more high-quality video content and formats available to consumers, demand is accordingly rising for a device with the versatility to display streaming content as easily as Blu-ray,” the release noted.

The LG CineBeam 4K Laser projector can create a 150-inch screen at 2,500 lumens, making it LG’s brightest projector, according to LG. It also supports HDR 10 content.

The LG CineBeam 4K Laser’s portable size and upright design are made possible thanks to its mirrorless I-shaped engine, which allows the projection of high-quality images whether the device is on the floor, mounted on the wall or hanging from the ceiling, according to the release. The projector also features a carrying handle and Auto Cord feature. The Mirror Reflector serves as a lens cover to protect the projector from dust when stored. On the audio side, the projector includes two 7W + 7W stereo speakers for sound “without the need for external speakers or a soundbar,” according to LG.

LG’s embedded webOS smart platform allows viewers access to online streaming services offering 4K content, according to the company. Standard connectivity options also include ports for USB, Ethernet and HDMI, as well as wireless support for external devices such as a keyboard and mouse.

Report: UHD TV Market Growing on Price Cuts

The global Ultra HD TV market is expected to expand at a combined annual growth rate of 28.23% from 2018 to 2022, according to a new report  “Global UHD TV Market 2018-2022” from Research and Markets.

According to the report, one driver in the market is the reduction in the average selling price of UHD TVs. The North American TV market witnessed a 90% reduction in UHD TV prices since its induction in 2012, and the average selling price of UHD TVs in China fell by about 85%.

One trend in the market is the rising popularity of curved UHD TVs. With TV manufacturers such as Samsung and Mitashi introducing curved TVs, the coming years will witness a growing preference for curved UHD TVs, according to the report.

Still, one challenge is a lack of UHD content, which is one of the key factors that could hinder the adoption of UHD TVs, according to the report.

Report: 4K UHD Demand to Boost TV Growth in 2018

Consumer demand for TV sets is poised to return to growth in 2018, boosted by 4K Ultra HD models, according to the latest “Worldwide TV Market Report” from Futuresource Consulting.

The recovery of several markets linked with a transition to 4K UHD models will push the market up by 5% to $85 billion, according to Futuresource.

“We believe 4K UHD TV sets will ship over 100 million units this year, equivalent to two-thirds of the entire large screen market,” said David Tett, market analyst at Futuresource Consulting, in a statement. “Consumers increasingly want larger screens, and this is playing nicely into the 4K UHD proposition.”

The world’s two largest markets, China and the United States, both saw falls in 2017 but have a positive outlook in 2018, Futuresource projects.

“They have been ahead of most other markets in terms of adoption of 4K UHD and large screens generally. Over three quarters of sets that sell in the U.S. and China this year will be over 40 [inches],” said Tett in a statement. “However, other regions are now catching up, and Western Europe is on course to match the 44% Chinese household ownership of 4K UHD TVs by 2022.”

With a substantial installed base of 4K UHD TV households to target, content is now becoming available across markets, according to Futuresource.

“Consumer research shows that there has been a significant step-up in the proportion of 4K UHD TV owners who say they have watched this content at home,” Tett said in a statement. “This is the result not just of an expanding number of SVOD subscribers, but also a growing choice of content via linear TV.”

Big premium TV vendors are increasing using voice assistant platforms to attract consumers, according to Futuresource. Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa are being incorporated into the latest TVs from LG, Hisense, TCL and Vizio. Samsung, meanwhile, is utilising its in-house Bixby assistant in its 2018 QLED range.

Also, in pursuit of better margins, most vendors have introduced either QLED or OLED display technology to larger screens, according to Futuresource.

“The two largest TV vendors are currently on opposing sides; Samsung is the driving force behind QLED and LG is OLED’s primary backer,” said Tett in a statement.

Futuresource expects a 41% CAGR between 2018 and 2022 of these technologies, resulting in around 8 million sets shipping in 2022.
Among other findings, Futuresource expects high dynamic range (HDR) to be present in 60% of 4K UHD sets this year. HDR 10 is the most commonly found solution currently across vendors but the availability of a range of technologies including HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Advanced HDR and Dolby Vision is leading to some consumer confusion, according to Futuresource.
