Investigative Doc ‘On the Trail of Bigfoot: Land of the Missing’ Due on VOD Aug. 22 From 1091 Pictures

Small Town Monsters lifts the veil on Alaska’s long and dark history of Sasquatch lore with their latest investigative documentary On the Trail of Bigfoot: Land of the Missing, which arrives Aug. 22 on VOD from 1091 Pictures.

The follow up to Last Frontier, the film picks up on threads established in that film and carries them into a terrifying and bizarre conclusion to to director Seth Breedlove and Small Town Monsters’ work in Alaska. Breedlove, along with a team of experts and adventurers, invites audiences to explore the last frontier through a darker lens than ever before. Centuries of reports of hair-covered creatures roaming Alaska have been uncovered. Yet beyond the mysterious apelike animals that haunt the forests of the 49th state, there exist numerous legends of horrific beings that blur the line between Bigfoot and something else — something with a far darker agenda. Eyewitnesses and experts alike recount stories that tie Bigfoot-like creatures to tales of mountain giants, and even missing persons.

Drama ‘The Wedding Hustler’ Headed to Digital Feb. 7 From 1091

The drama The Wedding Hustler will be released via digital retailers Feb. 7 from 1091 Pictures.

The film follows an Asian-American wedding planner (​​Christine Chang) who knows her “thang” on bargaining the best price. When she learns about a couple (Chris Soriano and Hillary Soriano) who rescheduled their wedding three times because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she decides to help the groom surprise his fiancée with the perfect wedding. With barely any money, the groom and the planner navigate through the street vendors of Los Angeles to piece together the wedding of his fiancé’s dreams.

Written and directed by Chris Soriano (Almighty Zeus), the film also stars Kane Lim (Netflix’s “Bling Empire”) with a cameo by Heart Evangelista.

‘Sextortion’ Documentary Available Digitally Oct. 4 From 1091 Pictures

The Auroris Media documentary Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic will be released through digital retailers Oct. 4 by 1091 Pictures.

The film takes an inside look into one of the largest sextortion cases investigated by Homeland Security and the Department of Justice.

The release of the film, from director, editor and producer Maria Peek and producer and cinematographer Stephen Peek, is timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month.

According to a press release, the film “merges true crime with an empowering educational opportunity that provides families with essential ways to keep their children safe on the Internet. As parents themselves, the filmmakers experienced sextortion in real time through one of their children’s classmates, and it inspired them to be the change they want to see in the world.”

Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic  made its world premiere at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival as part of the Social Justice Feature Documentaries. More recently, through the Spotlight Docs Series (a 501c3 that the filmmakers founded), the film completed a sold-out 20+ city educational tour around the country, with both the filmmakers and federal agents who ran the landmark case.

1091 Pictures Acquires Doc ‘Mind Traveler’

1091 Pictures, a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company, has acquired worldwide rights to Greg Mallozzi’s documentary Mind Traveler.

The documentary, which will be coming to digital platforms in spring 2023, explores the idea that some of the premises of government experiments similar to those in Netflix’s “Stranger Things” are real.

The documentary focuses on parapsychologist Andrija Puharich. After learning about the CIA’s interest in psychic phenomena, Puharich creates a study to prove his theory that children can be the greatest psychics in the world. He seeks out like-minded kids from around the world, near-death and UFO experiencers and channelers. Quickly the teens prove their psychic potential traversing space and time. Their every move is studied at a secretive lab whose very walls amplify their natural psychic powers, turning them into superhuman spies. 

Mind Traveler features exclusive first-time interviews with the study participants and access to Puharich’s archive, which includes home movies, recordings of remote viewing sessions, personal photographs and hand-written journal entries.

“This is a story I’ve been researching and trying to bring to life for over a decade,” director Greg Mallozzi said in a statement. “I’ve always believed Puharich to be one of the most fascinating yet relatively unknown figures of the 20th century. After the success of The Phenomenon, 1091 Pictures put a premium on UFO and supernatural documentaries, according to the studio. In May 2020, the company launched Unidentified, a linear streaming channel that features programming on paranormal and alien-related themes.

1091 Pictures Sets April 5 VOD Release of ‘On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors’

Independent film distributor 1091 Pictures has announced an April 5 digital release of On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors, a documentary from Small Town Monsters that investigates a series of cattle mutilations that have occurred at the Miller Ranch in Southern Colorado since 1999.

The documentary will be available through digital retailers, both cable and internet, including Amazon’s Prime Video.

On the Trail of UFOs: Night Visitors follows investigator Shannon LeGrow (host of the “Into the Fray” podcast) as he visits the Miller Ranch in Southern Colorado, where the property owner claims to have lost 16 cattle in ways that truly defy logic. They find an unusual amount of activity, from odd lights seen in the air and on the ground, to unusual sounds, enigmatic government black helicopters, and even specific parts of the property that seemed to invite deadly accidents. At the heart of all this activity was a series of cattle mutilations that truly call into question what we think we know about the topic of aliens and UFOs.

Directed and produced by Seth Breedlove, the documentary is a follow-up to the 2020 miniseries On the Trail of UFOs, and 2021’s On The Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky.

Chicken Soup for the Soul to Acquire 1091 Pictures

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, an operator of streaming AVOD networks, March 2 announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of 1091 Media, comprising its distribution business known as 1091 Pictures, for $15.5 million.

The purchase price is comprised of $8 million in cash, $2 million in the form of newly issued shares of the company’s Series A perpetual preferred stock valued at $25 per share, and 375,000 shares of Class A common stock valued at $14.80 per share.

With the acquisition, the company will dramatically expand its independent film and television series distribution business by integrating 1091 Pictures with its own Screen Media, according to a press release. Screen Media is the main supplier of content to the company’s AVOD networks and the deal approximately doubles the size of the company’s content catalog by adding titles that were previously unavailable to the Crackle Plus Networks.

1091 Pictures’ library of approximately 4,000 movies and TV series includes titles such as The Ghost of Peter Sellers; Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice; Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi’s What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople; Spirit Awards-winner Christine; the comedy The Overnight, starring Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling and Jason Schwartzman; sports stories such as A Kid From Coney Island, executive produced by Kevin Durant and featuring Stephon Marbury; Red Bull’s The Dawn Wall and Art of Flight; The Last Blockbuster; Pharma Bro; documentaries such as Close Encounters of The Fifth Kind and The Phenomenon, which reveal the latest intelligence on UFOs; and 1091 Pictures’ pipeline of more than 300 titles per year.

The acquisition provides immediate benefits to the company’s Crackle Plus Networks by adding established FAST and AVOD channels in specific verticals with approximately 1 billion yearly ad impressions to their channel portfolio, according to the release.   
“The 1091 Pictures team transformed their large content library into a scalable, modern distribution platform with a compelling slate of channels that are a pragmatic addition to our existing assets,” David Fannon, president of Screen Media Ventures, said in a statement. “There are great synergies between our two companies. Over time, joining 1091’s acquisition and distribution team with Screen Media’s team, leveraging the impressive infrastructure 1091 built for digital fulfillment, and folding the 1091-owned channel business into the Crackle Plus network, will make this a mutually beneficial and smooth transition.”

“This is the next evolution in our content library strategy,” Elana Sofko, chief strategy officer for Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, said in a statement. “The genre content with loyal fan bases from 1091 Pictures includes music, over a dozen different sports, paranormal, and much more, enabling us to continue to grow both our streaming services and our FAST channels. We will also continue growing the business that the 1091 Pictures team started and augment it with additional opportunities from the combined catalog.”    
“We are thrilled to be joining forces with the Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and Screen Media team,” Eric Min, GM and head of content for 1091 Pictures, said in a statement. “We are bullish that the scale and reach of the combined teams starts us on an exciting journey to be able to further capitalize on this strong amalgamation of assets.”
The company expects to recognize in excess of $10 million of revenue with approximately $3 million of incremental EBITDA in the next 12 months as a result of the transaction, according to the press release.
The acquisition is subject to satisfaction of certain closing conditions and is expected to close in early to mid-March 2022.

Vizio AVOD Platform Adds Indie Movies

Vizio has added a slate of indie movies to its growing ad-supported VOD platform WatchFree+, available on branded SmartCast televisions.

In separate license deals with 1091 Pictures (formerly The Orchard) and Total Content Digital, Vizio gained access to myriad titles, including Cartel Land, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, The Hero and The Overnight, as well as gangster movie American Animals.

“Few companies in today’s media landscape have the kind of market penetration that Vizio commands, which is why [its] foray into AVOD makes so much strategic sense,” Sana Soni, director of sales at 1091 Pictures, said in a statement. “We’re proud to work with Vizio on their ad-supported on demand programming journey, ensuring audiences have direct and easy access to 1091’s premium content which is sure to connect with viewers of all kinds.”

TCD titles include Paranormal Files, Remarkable Places to Eat, Killer Mysteries, Honey I Bought the House, Xploration Awesome Planet, Unsealed Alien Files and Coolest Places on Earth.

“What a great opportunity for TCD and for viewers to watch our vast library,” said Kenneth Campo, managing partner at TCD.

Vizio in August revamped WatchFree+ include a new program guide, data-driven content recommendations and custom curated channels.

Kevin Smith’s love of movies led him to make the 1994 indie comedy Clerks. Little did he know how much his self-funded labor of love would not only propel him down a path toward becoming a pop-culture icon, but bringing a degree of fame to those in his orbit as well.

The documentary Clerk. Is an exploration of that journey.

The film traces Smith’s life story from his childhood in New Jersey, to attending a film school in Canada on a whim. Inspired by Richard Linklater’s Slackers, Smith realized he didn’t need the backing of a major Hollywood studio to make a movie. And put himself in it, creating the character of Silent Bob, paired with his pal Jason Mewes as Jay.

The success of Clerks did bring Hollywood calling, landing Smith a gig to write and direct the film that would become 1995 Mallrats. And while that film was both a critical and commercial failure, it gave Smith the fodder to return to the indie fold with 1997’s Chasing Amy.

Using interviews with friends, family, fellow filmmakers and Smith himself, Clerk. chronicles the trajectory of Smith’s career to the present, from creating a shared universe of characters to tackling bizarre concepts such as Tusk, and how a heart attack led him to return to the world of Jay and Silent Bob.

Clerk. is a fascinating look at an unlikely Hollywood career. Smith’s fans in particular will eat it up, as it plays like a mega bonus feature for his entire filmography.

Kevin Smith Biographical Documentary ‘Clerk.’ Available Digitally Nov. 23

The documentary Clerk., about the life and career of indie film icon and raconteur Kevin Smith, will be available through digital retailers beginning Nov. 23 from 1091 Pictures.

Directed by Malcolm Ingram, the film features new interviews with friends, family, filmmaking peers, and icons of the film, comedy and comic book worlds, including Scott Mosier, Jason Mewes, Stan Lee, Justin Long, Penn Jillette, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Smith himself.

After growing up in New Jersey, Smith gained a passion for filmmaking and self-funded his debut feature film, Clerks, which was released in 1994. This opened the door to a career in the pop culture entertainment space, with subsequent directorial efforts such as Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, stints writing for popular comic book characters, and frequent speaking engagements at venues such as Comic-Con and his own podcast.

1091 Pictures, Small Monsters Set Home Release Dates for Cajun Werewolf Documentary

Small Town Monsters has announced the Sept. 14 home release of Skinwalker: The Howl of the Rougarou, a documentary from Seth Breedlove that tells the tale of the legendary Cajun werewolf.

The documentary will be available to purchase or rent on several platforms from 1091 Pictures, including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and FandangoNow. A special-edition Blu-ray and DVD can be purchased from Small Town Monsters’ official store.

The documentary details the legend of a mysterious creature that stalks the swamps and bayous. The ancient evil called Rougarou is thought to have been there long before the immigrants who settled the region. Legends tell of a cannibal tribe of shapeshifters who retreated deep into the forests where they slowly lost touch with their humanity. The tribe grew eventually grew into something far darker: skinwalkers. Now, nearly 400 years since the legend of the Rougarou first began to circulate, people are encountering the creature once again.
