‘Sonic’ Most-Watched Title for Fourth Straight Week

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Sonic the Hedgehog remained on top of the “Watched at Home” chart for the week ended June 13, its fourth consecutive week at No. 1.

With the COVID-19 production halts and movie theater closures beginning to impact the home entertainment pipeline, a lack of high-profile new releases is finding older releases dominating the weekly chart, which tracks transactional video activity compiled from studio and retailer data through DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group.

Universal Pictures’ The Invisible Man remake also remained at No. 2 for a third week.

The top new title in the top 20 was Universal’s The Hunt, which arrived on Blu-ray and DVD June 9. The thriller, an allegory about the conflict between America’s political right and left, earned $5.8 million during a brief theatrical run in March that ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns. Soon after, Universal made the film available for premium VOD, which is not tracked by the DEG’s chart. The Hunt was released for digital sellthrough May 26 but didn’t climb onto the top of the charts until its disc release.

Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and two Sony Pictures releases, Bad Boys for Life and Jumanji: The Next Level, dropped a slot each to No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The most notable newcomer to the chart for the week came in at No. 10, 1939’s Gone With the Wind, distributed on disc by Warner Bros. Disc sales of the film exploded during the week after HBO Max removed the film from its streaming service following complaints about outdated depictions of slavery during the Civil War. Though HBO Max vowed to return the film with additional programming to discuss the film’s historical context, consumers took matters into their own hands and decided to buy the film on disc and through digital retailers such as iTunes. The disc was the No. 2 seller on the NPD Group’s weekly disc sales chart.
