Paramount’s ‘Sonic 2’ Tops Predecessor With $71 Million Opening Weekend Box Office

Paramount Pictures’ kids-friendly Sonic the Hedgehog 2 bounded out of the gate to generate an estimated $71 million in opening box office weekend revenue across more than 4,200 screens through April 10. The tally trounces the previous benchmark set by the movie’s predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog, which tallied $58 million in its opening three-days in pre-COVID 2020.

Also helping the video game adaptation was excellent social media buzz, including an “A” on CinemaScore, a 97% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and 74% rating on Comscore’s PostTrack metric, as well as Spring Break release.

The opening for Sonic 2 (featuring again the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and Jim Carey playing Dr. Ivo Robotnik) bodes well for the franchise, as well as Paramount, which now has four No. 1 North American box office openers in 2022, including The Lost City, Scream and Jackass Forever.

Sonic 2 easily bested Universal Pictures’ Michael Bay-directed actioner Ambulance, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which only saw an estimated $8 million in ticket sales — well below previous conservative estimates around $14 million.
