‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado,’ ‘The First Purge’ Top Redbox Disc Rental and Digital Charts

Two new releases debuted in the two top spots on both Redbox charts the week ended Oct. 7.

Sony Pictures’ Sicario: Day of the Soldado, a thriller centered around the drug war at the U.S.-Mexico border and a sequel to 2015’s Sicario, bowed at No. 1 on both the Redbox kiosk chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals, and the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Bowing at No. 2, also on both charts, was Universal Pictures’ The First Purge, the fourth film in “Purge” franchise, about an annual 12-hour span in which Americans are invited to get out their aggressions, no matter how violent.

Both films were released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on Oct. 2 and on digital two weeks earlier, on Sept. 18.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which earned $50.1 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, features Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Jeffrey Donovan reprising their roles. Joining the cast are Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener.

The First Purge, with a worldwide gross of $135.9 million the top box officer earner in the franchise, is a prequel to the three other films. The film earned $69.1 million in North American theaters and stars Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, and Steve Harris.

After two weeks at No. 1, Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom slipped to No. 3 on both charts.

The film, the fifth in the “Jurassic Park” series, grossed $416.6 million in the United States and Canada and another $887.1 million in other territories for a total worldwide gross of $1.304 billion.

Lionsgate’s Uncle Drew in its second week of release finished the week at No. 6 on the disc-rental chart and No. 5 on the digital chart.

Rounding out the top five on the kiosk chart were Solo: A Star Wars Story, from Walt Disney, at No. 4, and Warner’s Ocean’s 8 at No. 5

On the digital chart, Ocean’s 8 came in at No. 4.
