‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Takes No. 1 Disc Sales Spot in May, No. 3 for the Year

Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon was No. 1 on the top 10 list of combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales for May 2021 according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service. The animated fantasy had been the top weekly seller the final two weeks of the month, which was enough to push it to N0. 3 on the list of top sellers for the entire year.

The No. 2 seller in May was Warner’s live-action/animation hybrid Tom & Jerry, which came out on disc the same day as Raya and was the runner-up to it on the weekly charts.

The No. 3 and No. 4 sellers were also released on disc in May. No. 3 was Universal’s The Marksman, a Liam Neeson actioner released May 11, while No. 4 was Warner’s crime drama The Little Things.

The April top seller, Warner’s Wonder Woman 1984, dropped to No. 5 for May. Another new release to heavily feature the Wonder Woman character, the animated superhero movie Justice Society: World War II, also from Warner, was the No. 6 May seller.

Paramount’s 2018 thriller A Quiet Place jumped to No. 9 in May, up from No. 103 in April, thanks to fans preparing for the sequel that hit theaters May 28.

The arrival of Raya shuffled the top 10 titles on the year-to-date chart a bit, though the top two titles remained the same, with Universal’s The Croods: A New Age maintaining the top spot, and Wonder Woman 1984 at No. 2.

Sony Pictures’ Monster Hunter slipped one spot to No. 4, while Disney’s Soul dropped two spots to No. 6.

In between them, taking over the year’s No. 5 spot, was the faith-based I Can Only Imagine, a catalog title released by Lionsgate in 2018. Its appearance in the annual top 10 is a bit of a surprise given it hasn’t been in the top 10 sellers for any month of the year.

Accordingly, Universal’s News of the World and Greenland also slid two spots each, to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Warner’s Justice League dropped one spot to No. 9, while Warner’s The Meg remained No. 10.

The new arrivals pushed Paramount’s Love and Monsters and Warner’s Tenet off the year’s top 10 list.
