Oct. 4 New Releases Include ‘DC League of Super-Pets,’ ‘Winning Time,’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ on Disc, ‘Easter Sunday’ on Digital

The week of Oct. 4 sees the DVD and Blu-ray releases of DC League of Super-Pets, Winning Time and season two of “Star Trek: Picard.”

The animated action-adventure DC League of Super-Pets arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 4 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Featuring the DC canon’s unsung heroes, Krypto and Ace, the film is based on characters from DC and Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. In DC League of Super-Pets, Krypto the Super-Dog (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) and Superman (John Krasinski) are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack — Ace the hound (Kevin Hart), PB the potbellied pig (Vanessa Bayer), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne) and Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna) — to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes. The voice cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Marc Maron, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz and Keanu Reeves. The film earned $91.6 million at the domestic box office. 

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty — The Complete First Season on Blu-ray Disc and DVD Oct. 4. The HBO original series is based on the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman, and focuses on the 1979-80 championship season, as Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) buys the team and drafts Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah). The cast also includes Jason Clarke as Jerry West, Adrien Brody as Pat Riley, Gaby Hoffmann as Claire Rothman, Tracy Letts as Jack McKinney, Jason Segel as Paul Westhead, Julianne Nicholson as Cranny McKinney, Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss, DeVaughn Nixon as Norm Nixon, Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tamera Tomakili as Earleatha “Cookie” Kelly, Brett Cullen as Bill Sharman, Stephen Adly Guirgis as Frank Mariani, Spencer Garrett as Chick Hearn, Sarah Ramos as Cheryl Pistono, Molly Gordon as Linda Zafrani, Joey Brooks as Lon Rosen, Delante Desouza as Michael Cooper, Jimel Atkins as Jamaal Wilkes, Austin Aaron as Mark Landsberger, Jon Young as Brad Holland, with Rob Morgan as Earvin Johnson Sr. and Sally Field as Jessie Buss. The Blu-ray and DVD of season one includes all 10 episodes plus bonus featurettes. The show is also available for digital purchase and streaming on HBO Max. The series has been renewed for a second season.

CBS and Paramount Home Entertainment release Star Trek: Picard — Season Two on Blu-ray Disc and DVD Oct. 4. The Blu-ray will also be available in limited-edition Steelbook packaging. The 10 episodes of the second season of the Paramount+ original series find Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew waking up in an alternate 25th century reality in which humanity has formed an evil empire bent on galactic domination, prompting them to go back in time to 2024 to set things right. However, seemingly standing in their way is Picard’s old nemesis Q (John de Lancie), a trickster with the power over time and space. The cast also includes Jeri Ryan, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Orla Brady, Santiago Cabrera, Brent Spiner, Annie Wersching, Ito Aghayere and Whoopi Goldberg.

Also from CBS and Paramount Home Entertainment Oct. 4 is Walker: Season Two, which arrives as a five-disc collection with all 20 episodes from the latest season of the “Walker, Texas Ranger” remake starring Jared Padalecki. The latest season kicks off when a family from Walker’s childhood returns, bringing up old memories and trauma. As Walker tries to reconcile the relationship between the two families, they encounter a decision that puts them both in a troubling situation. The DVD includes deleted scenes and a gag reel.

The horror thriller They Crawl Beneath debuts on digital, Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 4 from Well Go USA Entertainment. In the film, reminiscent of the fun horror films of the 1950s, young police officer Danny (Joseph Almani) is working on an antique car at his uncle’s remote ranch when a major earthquake hits, pinning him under the vehicle and leaving him bloodied, alone, and with no way to call for help. Just when he thinks the claustrophobic nightmare can’t get any worse, something truly horrifying emerges from the fissures in the ground, forcing Danny to engage in a brutal fight for his life — and his sanity. Directed by Dale Fabrigar (D-Railed, Lonely Boy), the thriller stars Michael Pare (The Lincoln Lawyer), Joseph Almani (Law of Attraction), Arthur Roberts (Not of This Earth), Merrick McCartha (Twisted Twin), Karlee Eldridge (House of Bodies), Elena Sahagun (Tremors 3: Back to Perfection) and Natalia Bilbao (No Man’s Law). The film had its world premiere at the Texas Frightmare Festival and will also be screening at the Horror Hotel Film Fest and the Halloween Horror Picture Show. 

The action-thriller Into the Deep will be available on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 4 from Lionsgate. From first time director Kate Cox, the film stars Matthew Daddario (“Shadowhunters”), Ella-Rae Smith and Jessica Alexander. A young woman desperate for an escape, meets a mysterious and attractive stranger who promises a romantic trip. What follows is deceit, mistrust, and violence. Jess (Ella-Rae Smith) is swept off her feet by Ben (Matthew Daddario), who takes her to his boat docked nearby. Dangerously adrift miles from shore, their romance is interrupted when Lexie (Jessica Alexander) shows up, and soon the three get wasted and play sexy games. When the party takes a sudden turn for the worse, it’s clear that either Ben or Lexie is a dangerous liar.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will release the comedy Easter Sunday through digital retailers Oct. 4. Stand-up comedian Jo Koy stars as a man who returns home for an Easter celebration with his loving and uproariously unpredictable Filipino-American family. The cast also includes Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Brandon Wardell, Eva Noblezada, Lydia Gaston, Asif Ali, Rodney To, Eugene Cordero, Jay Chandrasekhar, Tiffany Haddish and Lou Diamond Phillips. The film earned $13 million at the domestic box office. It arrives on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 18

The documentary Return to Auschwitz: The Survival of Vladimir Munk will be released via DVD, digital sellthrough and on DVD Oct. 4 from Virgil Films. The film follows Czech Holocaust survivor Vladimir Munk as he returns to Auschwitz, where he was held prisoner during World War II. This is his last chance to honor his family, including his parents, who perished there. The trip from the United States is filled with painful memories and unforeseen hardships, but it is a journey he knows he must take. Upon his return COVID-19 and heart problems threaten the well-being of this true survivor.

MPI Media Group Oct. 4 releases on DVD Marineland Carnival With the Munsters TV Cast Members & More Lost Treasures, a compilation of rare shows from the 1960s sitcom about a monster family living in a suburban neighborhood. The collection features long-lost television appearances featuring the Munster family —Fred Gwynne (Herman), Yvonne De Carlo (Lily), Al Lewis (Grandpa), Pat Priest (Marilyn) and Butch Patrick (Eddie). Included is the hour-long “Marineland Carnival 1965” special; a 1966 full-color “Munsters”-themed “episode” with Herman on “The Danny Kaye Show,” additional rare skits and vintage talk show interviews with “The Munsters” TV stars, an all-new featurette (Munster Memories) with Butch Patrick, hit music from the New Christy Minstrels, and guest appearances by Edie Adams, Joey Bishop and others.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the sequel Scream 2 arrives on 4K Ultra HD for the first time on Oct. 4 from Paramount Home Entertainment. Originally released on Dec. 12, 1997, in the United States, Scream 2 has been newly remastered in 4K and will be released both for digital purchase and in a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray set that includes legacy bonus content, as well as access to a digital copy of the film. The discs will be available in both standard and Steelbook packaging. In the film, away at college, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) thinks she’s finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her — until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel. Now, as history eerily repeats itself, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and other Scream survivors find themselves trapped in a terrifyingly clever plotline where no one is safe or beyond suspicion. 

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases the 1985 horror film Fright Night on 4K Ultra HD Oct. 4 in a limited-edition Steelbook. The film stars Chris Sarandon as the seductive vampire Jerry and William Ragsdale as the frantic teenager struggling to keep Jerry’s deadly fangs out of his neck. Only 17-year-old Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) knows Jerry’s bloodcurdling secret. When Charley can’t get anybody to believe him, he turns to TV horror host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), who used to be the “Great Vampire Killer” of the movies. They try to save Charley and his sweetheart Amy (Amanda Bearse) from the wrathful bloodsucker’s toothy embrace.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the horror classic Bram Stoker’s Dracula by reissuing the film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Oct. 4 in a limited-edition Steelbook with new special features. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Bram Stoker’s Dracula revisits the classic and chilling tale about the devastatingly seductive Transylvanian prince (Gary Oldman) who travels from Eastern Europe to 19th-century London in search of human love. When Dracula meets Mina (Winona Ryder), a young woman who appears as the reincarnation of his lost love, the two embark on a journey of romantic passion and horror. The new 4K Ultra HD edition includes the film presented in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision, including the original theatrical English subtitle font for texted instances. Fans can enjoy Dolby Atmos audio + 5.1 + Dolby Stereo. New special features include the Annie Lennox music video for “Love Song For A Vampire” and the featurette “Blood Lines — Dracula: The Man, The Myth, The Movies.” The film also will be reissued on regular Blu-ray Disc, sourced from the 4K master, with Dolby Atmos audio.

CBS and Paramount Oct. 4 release Melrose Place: The Complete Series as a 54-disc collection including all 226 episodes from the 1992-99 run of the Fox primetime soap set in the “90210” universe. The drama from producer Aaron Spelling focuses on the lives and loves of young adults in an apartment complex in Los Angeles, from the complicated scheming of scandals to the murderous plots of lovers.

CBS and Paramount Oct. 4 also release Showtime’s Dexter: The Complete Series + New Blood megaset that includes all 96 episodes from the original 2006-13 series, and 10-episodes from the 2021-22 revival limited series, on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. As a Miami forensics expert, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) spends his days solving crimes, and nights committing them. As a serial killer who hunts criminals, Dexter lives by a strict code of honor that is both his saving grace and lifelong burden. Torn between his deadly compulsion and his desire for true happiness, Dexter is a man in profound conflict with the world and himself.

Also arriving Oct. 4 from CBS and Paramount is The Twilight Zone (Reboot): The Complete Series as a seven-DVD set. Hosted by Jordan Peele, the 2019-20 CBS All Access (now Paramount+) series provides a modern take on the classic anthology created by Rod Sterling.

The Auroris Media documentary Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic will be released through digital retailers Oct. 4 by 1091 Pictures. The film takes an inside look into one of the largest sextortion cases investigated by Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. The release of the film, from director, editor and producer Maria Peek and producer and cinematographer Stephen Peek, is timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month. According to a press release, the film “merges true crime with an empowering educational opportunity that provides families with essential ways to keep their children safe on the Internet. As parents themselves, the filmmakers experienced sextortion in real time through one of their children’s classmates, and it inspired them to be the change they want to see in the world.” Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic  made its world premiere at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival as part of the Social Justice Feature Documentaries. More recently, through the Spotlight Docs Series (a 501c3 that the filmmakers founded), the film completed a sold-out 20+ city educational tour around the country, with both the filmmakers and federal agents who ran the landmark case.

Shout! Factory and GKIDS Oct. 4 release the new animated film The Deer King through digital retailers. Bonus features include conversations with the voice cast, an introduction from director Masashi Ando, a design gallery, and more. The Deer King is based on the award-winning fantasy novel series by author Nahoko Uehashi, which has sold over 2 million copies and won major literary awards. Animated by the Production I.G studio, the film marks the directorial debut of animator Ando, who previously worked as a character designer, animation director, and key animator with the famed Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke), and with directors Satoshi Kon and Makoto Shinkai. Co-director Masayuki Miyaji is best known for directing the 2009 series “Xam’d: Lost Memories” and work on Studio Ghibli films such as My Neighbors the Yamadas. Notable works from  Production I.G include Ghost in the Shell and the series “FLCL,” “Haikyu!!” and “Psycho Pass.” The Deer King is a story of survival. Following a brutal war, former soldier Van toils in a mine controlled by the ruling empire. One day, his solitary existence is upended when a pack of wild dogs carrying a deadly and incurable disease attack, leaving only Van and a young girl named Yuna as survivors. Finally free, the pair seek out a simple existence in the countryside but are pursued by nefarious forces. Intent on protecting Yuna at all costs, Van must uncover the true cause of the plague ravaging the kingdom — and its possible cure. The Blu-ray + DVD combo pack arrives Oct. 18.

Oct. 7 sees the arrival of Beast for digital sellthrough from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Beast follows recently widowed father Dr. Nate Samuels (Idris Elba), who returns to South Africa with his two daughters Meredith (Iyana Halley) and Norah (Leah Jeffries) to visit an old friend, Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley) on a game reserve. What begins as a journey of healing turns into a fearsome fight for survival as his family find themselves hunted by a massive, rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. It arrivs on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 11.
