

Nielsen: Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ Disney’s ‘Encanto’ Most-Streamed Show, Movie in 2022

The season four launch of Netflix’s original series “Stranger Things” helped the sci-fi show top all episodic programming streamed across household televisions in 2022, according to new data from Nielsen. The research company tracks Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max and Apple TV+ content.
“Stranger Things” generated 52 billion minutes across 34 episodes, followed by re-runs of “NCIS” tracking 38.1 billion minutes across 356 episodes, and child-friendly “Cocomelon” generating 37.8 billion minutes across 18 episodes. That was enough to hold off Emmy-winning dark drama “Ozark” with 31.3 billion minutes across 44 episodes.
Netflix continues its SVOD market domination on series content, accounting for 11 of Nielsen’s top 15 streamed shows in 2022.

When it comes to movie streaming, Disney+ has emerged as a market leader. The SVOD/AVOD platform accounted for 10 of Nielsen’s top 15 streamed movies in 2022, led by animated musical Encanto (27.4 billion minutes), Pixar Animation’s Turning Red (11.4 billion), and Disney’s Moana (8.6 billion). Netflix’s license of Universal Pictures’ Sing 2 (11.3 billion) rounded out Nielsen’s streamed movie podium.
Netflix’s top-streamed original movie in 2022 was The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds, with 6.1 billion minutes.
