Netflix to Live-Stream Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in New Long-Term Deal
January 11, 2023
The Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will stream live on Netflix globally beginning in 2024 after the subscription streaming VOD pioneer inked a multiyear partnership with the annual industry awards group. Netflix will live-stream this year’s 29th SAG Awards ceremony on its YouTube channel.
The SAG Awards is the only televised awards program exclusively honoring the performances of its member actors. Netflix, along with HBO/HBO Max, has been a perennial industry awards nomination/statue-winning champion. Live-streaming its success would appear to be a smart marketing ploy.
“The SAG Awards are beloved by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these talented actors,” Bela Bajaria, head of global TV at Netflix, said in a statement.
Netflix’s move toward live-streaming, which includes an upcoming Chris Rock standup comedy show, underscores the streaming market’s embrace of sports, including Prime Video’s NFL Thursday Night Football deal, Major League Soccer’s 10-year deal with Apple TV+, and HBO Max’s eight-year live streaming pact with the U.S. Soccer Association.
“As we begin to explore live streaming on Netflix, we look forward to partnering with SAG-AFTRA to elevate and expand this special ceremony as a global live event in 2024 and the years to come,” Bajaria said.
This year’s SAG awards is scheduled to be broadcast online on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, celebrating motion picture and television performances of 2022. The ceremony will be presented by SAG-AFTRA with Screen Actors Guild Awards, LLC and executive produced by Jon Brockett and produced by Avalon Harbor Entertainment.
Nominees for the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be announced this morning (Jan. 11) at 7 a.m. PT by Ashley Park (Netflix’s “Emily in Paris”) and Haley Lu Richardson (HBO Max’s “The White Lotus”), and via Instagram Live on instagram.com/sagawards and instagram.com/Netflix.
The nominees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles will be announced by SAG Awards Committee Members Jason George and Elizabeth McLaughlin with an introduction by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.
