Netflix Saw DVD Rental Revenue Plummet 50% in 2022

Netflix’s legacy by-mail DVD rental business took another step toward fiscal irrelevance in 2022 with revenue dropping 50% to $100 million for the fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2022. The company generated $200 million in annual disc rental revenue in both 2020 and 2021.

Netflix, which began operations in April 1998 renting DVD movies by mail, does not include packaged-media rental revenue in its fiscal results. The streamer last reported more than 2.1 million disc subscribers at the end of 2019.

Netflix’s standard DVD plan is $7.99 a month for one disc at a time ($9.99 when renting Blu-ray Disc titles), and the premier plan is $11.99 a month for two DVDs out at a time ($14.99 for Blu-ray).
